Padres signed RHP Sean O'Sullivan to a minor league contract.
The deal includes a spring training invite. O'Sullivan, 25, had a 4.23 ERA and 70/46 K/BB ratio over 142 2/3 innings this past season in Triple-A between the Royals and Blue Jays. He has a 6.13 ERA over 43 games (34 starts) in the majors and will need a big spring to win a roster spot.

Blue Jays acquired RHP Sean O'Sullivan from the Royals for cash considerations.
O'Sullivan, 24, has an ugly 6.75 ERA and 26/23 K/BB ratio over 53 1/3 innings as a starter and reliever at the Triple-A level this year and a 6.13 ERA over 193 2/3 innings in the big leagues. This move is more about adding some pitching depth at the Triple-A level, as the injury-riddled Jays have recently been forced to move a number of pitchers up to the big league level.

O'Sullivan allowed just one baserunner via a walk in the fifth inning and struck out two. The 24-year-old right-hander is out of options and isn't expected to make the Royals' Opening Day roster, but he may have impressed a scout or two on Friday night.

Suspended
Yasmani Grandal will begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Tucson.
Grandal is still serving his 50-game suspension for a positive PED test, but he is allowed to begin a 10-game minor league assignment. The 24-year-old backstop is eligible to join the Padres on May 28 and may split playing time with Nick Hundley upon his return.

Logan Forsythe (foot) took batting practice on the field Thursday.
It's the first time he's done so since plantar fasciitis in his right foot sent him to the DL prior to the season. Forsythe also took ground balls before Thursday's game. "He's on the field doing baseball activities stuff, so he's on the way back," Padres manager Bud Black said. "He's on the mend." The team hasn't revealed a timetable for Forsythe, but he should be ready sometime next month if all goes well.

Quentin missed Thursday's game following the birth of his son and was placed on paternity leave Friday. The Padres will have to make a roster move Saturday in order to bring him back.

Cameron Maybin (wrist) hit in the batting cages on Thursday.
It's the first time he's done so since he landed on the disabled list last month with a right wrist impingement. The Padres aren't sure what the next step is for the outfielder, but Maybin said the session went "way, way better" than he expected. "I'm excited," Maybin said. "It's tough watching, but it's also been great watching how great the team has been playing. I'm eager to get back in the mix."

Clayton Richard (illness) will make a second rehab start with Triple-A Tucson.
Richard struck out eight over six innings of one-run ball Thursday for Tucson, but the Padres want him to have another tune-up. "He feels good about where he is right now, how his arm feels and how he feels physically in general, from the whole bad virus he contracted," manager Bud Black said. Assuming Richard feels fine in his next outing, he could rejoin the rotation as soon as next weekend.

Luebke had a minor setback in early March and was shut down from his throwing program, but he's slowly starting to build up his workload again. He's not sure if the time off will have an impact on his timeline, but the Padres were previously aiming for him to return around midseason.

Wieland, currently on the 60-day disabled list, is nine months removed from Tommy John surgery and will continued to be moved along slowly. If he can avoid setbacks, Wieland should be game-ready sometime after the All-Star break.

Kelly will undergo Tommy John surgery during the first week of April. Obviously, he won't be making any contribution this season.
