Edinson Volquez allowed five runs over five innings in the Padres' loss to the Nationals on Thursday.
Volquez walked four and struck out seven. After struggling mightily through his first three starts of the season, Volquez posted a 2.59 ERA over his last five entering Thursday. Perhaps he was due for a stinker. He's no better than a matchup play in standard formats. Next week's outing against the Cardinals doesn't look attractive in that regard.

Edinson Volquez turned in another strong outing in Friday’s no-decision against the Rays, allowing two runs on three hits over six frames.
Volquez walked four and struck out three in the game. He departed with a 3-2 lead and in line to earn his fourth victory, but the Friars bullpen was unable to hold on for him. After struggling mightily through his first three starts on the season, Volquez has posted a 2.59 ERA over his last five starts. He remains a decent matchup play when skimming his home starts and looks like an attractive option against the Nationals at home on Thursday.

Edinson Volquez allowed one run on four hits in 6 2/3 innings in Sunday's win over the Diamondbacks.
Volquez got 11 ground-ball outs, but finished with just three strikeouts. After a sluggish start, it's his third straight win this season. His lone mistake was a solo shot to Didi Gregorius in the third inning. Volquez will get Rays on Saturday in his next start.

Despite the win, Volquez was underwhelming in giving up seven hits and three walks to Cubs batters. The right-hander had turned in two strong starts previously, making him a frustrating and confusing fantasy option. He's an enter-at-your-own-risk proposition outside of NL-only leagues. He'll get the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Suspended
Yasmani Grandal will begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Tucson.
Grandal is still serving his 50-game suspension for a positive PED test, but he is allowed to begin a 10-game minor league assignment. The 24-year-old backstop is eligible to join the Padres on May 28 and may split playing time with Nick Hundley upon his return.

Logan Forsythe (foot) took batting practice on the field Thursday.
It's the first time he's done so since plantar fasciitis in his right foot sent him to the DL prior to the season. Forsythe also took ground balls before Thursday's game. "He's on the field doing baseball activities stuff, so he's on the way back," Padres manager Bud Black said. "He's on the mend." The team hasn't revealed a timetable for Forsythe, but he should be ready sometime next month if all goes well.

Padres manager Bud Black said he'd like Cameron Maybin (wrist) to get around 30 rehab at-bats.
Maybin hit in the cage and on the field before Monday's game and will do the same thing on Tuesday and Wednesday. Assuming it goes well, he'll begin a rehab assignment on Friday. Maybin could return before the end of the month.

Clayton Richard (illness) will make a second rehab start with Triple-A Tucson.
Richard struck out eight over six innings of one-run ball Thursday for Tucson, but the Padres want him to have another tune-up. "He feels good about where he is right now, how his arm feels and how he feels physically in general, from the whole bad virus he contracted," manager Bud Black said. Assuming Richard feels fine in his next outing, he could rejoin the rotation as soon as next weekend.

Cory Luebke (elbow) has had his throwing program stopped for the second time this year in his attempt to return from Tommy John surgery.
Luebke was shut down in early March before resuming sessions of catch on April 1, and he had progressed to throwing off a mound before this latest setback. Obviously none of this bodes well for his mission to return to live major league games by the All-Star break.

Joe Wieland (elbow) threw a bullpen session Friday at the Padres' spring training complex.
Wieland, currently on the 60-day disabled list, is nine months removed from Tommy John surgery and will continued to be moved along slowly. If he can avoid setbacks, Wieland should be game-ready sometime after the All-Star break.

Kelly will undergo Tommy John surgery during the first week of April. Obviously, he won't be making any contribution this season.
