Scott Van Slyke went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBI in Wednesday's 5-2 win against the Mariners.
Employing a career .259/.351/.472 hitter as your fifth outfielder must make GM Farhan Zaidi and President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman, formerly of the penny-pinching A's and Rays, respectively, giggle behind closed doors. Van Slyke, who hit .317/.396/.537 this spring, is an underrated platoon weapon, slashing 315/.415/.630 with eight bombs against lefties in 108 at-bats last year. He's not exactly helpless against righties either, hitting .279/.354/.413 against them in 2014 (right-hander Taijuan Walker was on the hill tonight in Van Slyke's first 2015 start). Van Slyke would garner 400-plus plate appearances on a handful of teams, but Zaidi and Friedman are content to continue letting him chew bubblegum and murder southpaws as matchups dictate.
