Justin Ruggiano struck out as a pinch-hitter in Thursday's 5-3, extra-innings loss to the Reds.
Since May 6, he has just three hits, dropping his average to .216. After breaking out in 2012 as a 30-year-old -- Ruggiano batted .313 with 13 homers, 14 steals and 36 RBI in 91 games -- he's plummeted back to earth. Ruggiano has a tantalizing combination of power and speed which he deploys seemingly at random. For instance, on May 5, in a 14-2 win over the Phils, Ruggiano blasted a pair of homers and stole a base. Since that time? He's slashed an unsightly .148/.258/.259 and has been caught stealing as many bases as he's swiped (one).

Justin Ruggiano blasted a solo home run off Aroldis Chapman in the ninth inning on Friday, powering the Marlins to a 2-1 victory over the Reds.
It was Ruggiano’s only hit in four trips to the plate on the evening, but far and away the biggest in the game. Working to prove that his 2012 season was no fluke, Ruggiano is now hitting .259/.310/.500 with three homers, nine RBI and three steals through his first 15 games. He remains a very attractive option as a third or fourth outfielder in mixed leagues due to his tantalizing combination of power and speed.

Justin Ruggiano accounted for the Marlins' only run in Thursday's loss to the Reds, hitting a solo homer.
Tony Cingrani only throws fastballs and Ruggiano only hits fastballs, so it was a favorable matchup for the outfielder. He also had a single and drew a walk. Ruggiano entered the season in a platoon with Chris Coghlan, but he's outperformed him and should draw the majority of starts.

Justin Ruggiano finished 2-for-4 with three RBI in the Marlins' win over the Nationals on Tuesday.
Ruggiano is clearly well past the groin tightness that bothered him last week. He's now batting .256/.304/.419 with one homer, seven RBI and three stolen bases.

Logan Morrison (knee) is slated to begin a rehab assignment with High-A Jupiter on Monday.
Morrison has been playing in extended spring training games lately and hasn't had any setbacks with his surgically-repaired knee. With his 20-day rehab clock started on Monday, he'll be activated no later than early June as long as he doesn't have a setback.

Marlins manager Mike Redmond said Casey Kotchman (hamstring) could begin a rehab assignment "in the next few days."
Kotchman is finally feeling improvement with his strained left hamstring. He was moved to the 60-day DL last week, though, so he won't be eligible to return until June.

Mahoney has been out since late April with a right hamstring strain. With Logan Morrison (knee) and Casey Kotchman (hamstring) also due back soon, Mahoney might be sent to Triple-A once healthy.

Chris Valaika underwent successful surgery on Friday, having two pins inserted into his wrist.
Valaika is expected to require 4-6 weeks of healing time before he's able to return to the Marlins. He had been virtually ineffective in his 22 games before the injury, hitting .219/.261/.344 with one homer and nine RBI.

Diaz should be ready to return to the active roster as soon as he's eligible. The 35-year-old is batting just .167/.211/.222 in 10 games this season with the Marlins.

That's what Marlins skipper Mike Redmond told reporters on Saturday afternoon. Stanton has been on the disabled list since April 30 with a severe right hamstring strain and is being limited currently to pool workouts. There is no timetable for his return to Miami.

It's not clear how long the Rule 5 pick will be out. Silverio missed the entire 2012 season after injuring his neck and back in an auto accident.

Marlins manager Mike Redmond said Thursday that Nathan Eovaldi (shoulder) has been progressing with his long-toss program.
It's not clear when Eovaldi will be ready to throw from a mound, but he's moving in the right direction. The right-hander looks to be a little behind Henderson Alvarez, who should be ready to rejoin the Marlins' rotation in mid-May.
