Jeff Samardzija was tagged for five runs in six innings Thursday in a no-decision against the Reds.
The five runs allowed tied a season-high. Samardzija gave up 10 hits and four walks in the no-decision, but also struck out six and now holds the NL strikeout lead with 104 in 91 innings. He'll carry a 3.46 ERA into a tough matchup against the Cardinals next week.

Jeff Samardzija struggled in Saturday’s loss to the Pirates, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk over six frames.
On the bright side, he was able to rack up seven strikeouts. Pedro Alvarez was responsible for most of the damage, hitting an RBI single in the first inning and a two-run bomb in the fourth. Despite compiling a stellar 3.18 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 98/29 K/BB ratio through 85 innings this season, Samardzija now sits at 3-7. He’ll look to bounce back when he does battle against the Reds at home on Thursday.

Jeff Samardzija was charged with three runs in 6 1/3 innings after striking out 11 Diamondbacks on Saturday.
Samardzija was pulled with a 3-1 lead after walking two of the three batters he faced in the seventh. Both runners came around to score off James Russell, and the Diamondbacks ended up winning 12-4 from there. Samardzija still doesn't have a win this year in a game in which he's worked less than eight innings. He's 3-6 with a 2.96 ERA.

Jeff Samardzija pitched a two-hitter for his first career shutout Monday against the White Sox.
Quite the gem from Samardzija, who had neared shutouts before but hadn't quite been able to pull one off. Both hits he allowed tonight were singles, and he finished with eight strikeouts and two walks in the 108-pitch outing. The win was just the third for Samardzija, but he has a terrific 2.85 ERA through 11 starts.

Clevenger has been over his oblique strain for a while now, but he's on the 60-day DL and not eligible to return until mid-June. It's probably not a given that he'll be added to the big league roster once eligible.

This confirms the original diagnosis. DeJesus suffered the injury when he slammed into the center field fence during Friday's game against the Mets. There's still no timetable for his return.

It was Baker's first time throwing since he was shut down near the end of spring training with a right elbow strain. The Cubs will know a lot more about his timetable once he starts to build up his workload.

Kyuji Fujikawa underwent Tommy John surgery on Tuesday.
The reconstructive elbow procedure was performed by Dr. James Andrews and deemed a success. Fujikawa has already been placed on the 60-day disabled list and is unlikely to be ready to pitch for the Cubs again until June of next season. He signed a two-year, $9.5 million free agent contract with Chicago this past winter.

Cubs placed RHP Rafael Dolis on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 27, with a forearm strain.
No word on the severity of the injury. Dolis has yet to allow a run in five appearances with the Cubs this season. Blake Parker has been called up from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move.

Putnam left Tuesday's game with elbow soreness and is scheduled to undergo an MRI. The Cubs have called up Brooks Raley to replace him on the active roster.

Arodys Vizcaino has been ruled out for the season after recently undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow to address a calcium buildup.
Vizcaino wasn't progressed as hoped in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, and now we know why. It's a shame that he won't appear for the Cubs in 2013, but the good news is that his ligaments are fine and he should be ready to go for spring training. Vizcaino will be shut down for six weeks before beginning his rehab.
