Jonathon Niese allowed three runs -- none earned -- through six innings in the Mets' loss to the Reds on Tuesday.
Niese has consecutive quality starts in his last two outings. The left-hander allowed five hits and three walks on the night, striking out seven. He hasn't fully turned the corner yet, but he's looking better than he did in his first two May starts. He'll start again on Monday against the Yankees.

Jon Niese believes he ironed out his mechanical issues since his last start.
Niese watched himself in a mirror while he worked on trying to keep his body tall and on a straight line. He also threw more max-effort pitches than usual in his between-starts bullpen session and considered it his best session of the year. The left-hander has allowed 15 runs over his last two starts but will be looking for better results on Thursday in St. Louis.

A source told Andy Martino of the New York Daily News that Jon Niese has been pitching through a neck injury.
Niese has allowed a total of 15 earned runs over his last two starts, and now there's an explanation for those struggles. "His neck has been bothering him," the source said. "He hasn’t wanted to talk to (the media) about it, or make excuses. Just a lot of soreness there." Niese will test himself in a bullpen session early this week. He's scheduled to face the Cardinals on Thursday in St. Louis.

Jon Niese was hammered for eight runs over 4 1/3 innings Saturday in a loss to the Pirates.
The eight runs allowed tied a career-high. Niese downplayed a possible back issue earlier this week, but one wonders if it has affected his performance. He now has a 5.93 ERA and 21/22 K/BB ratio over 41 innings this season. That's not like him, so it wouldn't be a surprise if something was up physically.

Jenrry Mejia (elbow) racked up six strikeouts over three innings during his first minor league rehab start with High-A St. Lucie on Friday.
Mejia has been on the disabled list for the entire season with inflammation in his pitching elbow. He's likely to require a relatively lengthy rehab assignment, and shouldn't be expected to return to the Mets until early June. Should he secure a spot in the Mets rotation, he could carve out a decent amount of value in NL-only and deeper mixed leagues.

Francisco was diagnosed with a mild strain of the flexor pronator in his right elbow last week, but he's already back at it. However, it's not clear if he's throwing from a mound or simply playing catch or long-tossing. Either way, he's not close to rejoining the Mets' bullpen.

Collin McHugh was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas to fill the vacant bullpen spot. Atchison has been shut down for a week and prescribed anti-inflammatory medication. It's not clear when he might return.
