Twins general manager Terry Ryan said Kyle Gibson is not an option to replace Pedro Hernandez in the rotation.
Gibson tossed a shutout Wednesday at Triple-A Rochester and now boasts a 3.32 ERA and 35/11 K/BB ratio over 40 2/3 innings. Even though it appears he won't be called up soon, the righty is a good bet to spend significant time with the big club this season.

Baseball America's Jim Shonerd says Kyle Gibson could be an option for the Twins if he continues to string together a few more dominant starts at Triple-A Rochester.
The Twins are usually on the conservative end of promotions, but Gibson would provide an immediate upgrade to a starting rotation that currently lacks any viable starters. In six Triple-A starts, Gibson has a 4.26 ERA with a 7.7 SO/9 and 1.29 WHIP. After missing most of 2012 due to Tommy John surgery, Gibson is expected to be on a 130-140 innings limit this season.

Twins optioned RHP Kyle Gibson to Triple-A Rochester.
Gibson posted an ugly 9.00 ERA in eight Grapefruit League innings this spring, but he would have opened the season in the minors even if his numbers were really good. The 25-year-old right-hander should make his major league debut at some point during the first half of 2013.

Kyle Gibson was pounded for six runs and eight hits in 2 1/3 innings by the Phillies on Thursday.
Gibson has showed good velocity this spring, but he might be in need of some Triple-A time after missing most of 2012 following Tommy John surgery. Besides, the Twins would be smart to push back his free agency clock a year by giving him at least a month in the minors.

Darin Mastroianni will undergo surgery on Wednesday to repair a bone chip on his left ankle, and will be sidelined for at least six weeks.
It was a very discouraging sign when Mastroianni, who was already progressing slowly in his recovery, was uncomfortable testing his ankle during light sprints on Wednesday. He shouldn't be expected to return to the Twins until after the All-Star break and can safely be dropped in deeper mixed formats.

Cole De Vries (forearm) will make his second rehab start with Double-A New Britain on Friday.
De Vries allowed two runs -- one earned -- while giving up six hits over four innings in his first rehab outing on Sunday. "He came through all right," Twins general manager Terry Ryan said. "He got to about 50 pitches or so. So he'll pitch May 10 for New Britain at home and we'll see how he does. We'll stretch him out again." De Vries is expected to be stretched out 100 pitches before becoming an option for the Twins' rotation.

An MRI taken Wednesday on Tim Wood's right shoulder showed no signs of major structural damage.
Wood is headed to Minnesota for a second look. The 30-year-old has posted an ugly 8.68 ERA in 9 1/3 innings this season between High-A Fort Myers and Triple-A Rochester. He is currently on the MLB disabled list.
