Athletics sent INF Luke Hughes outright to Triple-A Sacramento.
Hughes lasted just a few games before being designated for assignment by the A's, but he'll remain in the organization and could get another shot if Brandon Inge flops.

Athletics designated 3B Luke Hughes for assignment.
The A's claimed Hughes off waivers from the Twins just eight days ago, but they've already found a replacement for him in Brandon Inge. The 27-year-old Australian will probably try to find a gig in a different organization.

Luke Hughes (flu) went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts Saturday in his return to the A's starting lineup.
Hughes had been held out of action for a couple of days due to the flu. He has a brutal .293 OPS on the year.

Updating a previous item, Luke Hughes is sitting out Friday's game due to illness.
Hughes is still bothered by the high fever which caused him to sit out Wednesday's game. Eric Sogard will make the start at third base again Friday, but Hughes could be back in there as soon as Saturday.

Brandon Inge (groin) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A Sacramento.
He'll start at third base and bat second. If all goes well this weekend, he'll rejoin Oakland's lineup as soon as he's eligible on Monday. The 35-year-old is hitting .227 (10-for-44) with four home runs and 17 RBI in 11 games since signing with the A's at the end of April.

Scott Sizemore underwent successful surgery on his left knee Wednesday morning.
Sizemore was expected to open the season as the A's starting third baseman, but he tore the ACL in his left knee early in camp and has been ruled out for the entire 2012 season. However, he's fully expected to be ready for spring training next year.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Friday there's a ''good possibility'' Yoenis Cespedes (hand) will need a rehab assignment.
The was some optimism Cespedes could return Monday but that now seems unlikely. The Cuban outfielder has been sidelined since May 7 with a muscle strain in his left hand. A best-case scenario would have him returning sometime late next week.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that the team is not "locked into" activating Manny Ramirez on May 30.
Ramirez is eligible to join the A's on May 30, but the team wants him to get around 40 at-bats in the minors and show that he can produce offensively. He's 3-for-8 with two walks over his first three games with Triple-A Sacramento.

Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) resumed throwing on Friday.
The hope is that he'll only require the minimum on the disabled list. McCarthy has a 2.95 ERA and 40/16 K/BB ratio in nine starts this season. Graham Godfrey will likely be demoted when he returns.

Braden had been playing catch often, but the A's have decided he needs to build up more shoulder strength before throwing again. He remains without a timetable for return, but we almost surely won't see him before the All-Star break.

The move clears a spot for the newly-claimed Travis Blackley on the active roster. Devine underwent Tommy John surgery last month and will miss the entire 2012 season.
