Jason Castro had two hits and scored the winning run in the Astros' 4-2 win over the Pirates on Saturday.
Castro led off the top of the 11th inning with a double off the wall and scored on a Matt Dominguez fielder's choice. The catcher owns just a .243/.282/.393 line on the year, but he's got more pop than that and he's been pegged as the Astros' long-term backstop.

Jason Castro went 0-for-2 with a walk and a sacrifice fly in Friday's loss to the Pirates.
Castro was hitting .284 as recently as May 4, but he has just six hits over his last 41 at-bats, lowering his batting average down to .237 for the season. The 25-year-old backstop shouldn't be hitting in the middle of the order on a major league team, but the Astros don't have many quality options.

Jason Castro went hitless on Tuesday to drop his average to .200 in 50 at-bats.
The Astros have been trying Castro in the three hole, but he doesn't have an RBI in six games there so far. He probably belongs in the fifth or sixth spot with his modest .305 career OBP.

Still tearing it up this spring, Jason Castro homered and doubled Tuesday versus the Blue Jays.
Castro is now 12-for-26 with five homers and 11 RBI. He's even stolen a base, which is something he's never done in 154 regular-season games. Castro has hit eight homers as a major leaguer and totaled 17 in 222 career minor league games, so we're not going to make too much of the outburst this spring. Still, it'd certainly be great for the Astros if he blossoms into a 15-homer guy and firmly establishes himself as a building block.

Justin Maxwell (hand) hit 15 balls off a tee and took 30 soft-tosses on Monday.
Maxwell is no longer wearing a brace on his fractured left hand and is progressing steadily. He's scheduled to have a routine X-ray on Tuesday to see how the healing is coming along. The outfielder should make a late May/early June return if all goes well.

Josh Fields (forearm) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday with High-A Quad Cities.
Fields is scheduled to throw two innings. The Rule 5 pick appeared in two games with the Astros in early April prior to being placed on the disabled list. If all goes well, he could return to the big club sometime this month.

Paul Clemens left Monday's appearance with a right pinkie injury.
Clemens was struck by a comebacker and appeared to dislocate the finger, but the Astros' trainer popped it back in place and he stayed in to face one more batter. The club reconsidered after that, though, and decided to remove him. Clemens saved the bullpen with 5 1/3 scoreless relief frames after Erik Bedard lasted only 1/3 of an inning.

Alex White will undergo Tommy John surgery.
White showed diminished velocity this spring and was diagnosed with a strained pitching elbow, but the injury turned out to be worse than that. The young right-hander will obviously miss all of 2013 and might not be ready for the start of 2014.
