Richard, out since May 4 with an intestinal virus, gave up five hits and no walks while striking out four. The southpaw threw 65 out of 94 pitches for strikes. It should be enough for the Padres to activate him from the disabled list.

Clayton Richard (illness) will make a second rehab start with Triple-A Tucson.
Richard struck out eight over six innings of one-run ball Thursday for Tucson, but the Padres want him to have another tune-up. "He feels good about where he is right now, how his arm feels and how he feels physically in general, from the whole bad virus he contracted," manager Bud Black said. Assuming Richard feels fine in his next outing, he could rejoin the rotation as soon as next weekend.

Clayton Richard (illness) threw a simulated game Saturday at Tropicana Field.
Richard was placed on the disabled list Sunday with an intestinal virus and reportedly lost 12 pounds since the issue surfaced. He'll need to continue to build up strength before he's able to return. Even when healthy, Richard won't be guaranteed a spot in the Padres' rotation.

Yasmani Grandal will begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Tucson.
Grandal is still serving his 50-game suspension for a positive PED test, but he is allowed to begin a 10-game minor league assignment. The 24-year-old backstop is eligible to join the Padres on May 28 and may split playing time with Nick Hundley upon his return.

Maybin is expected to need around 30 rehab at-bats, so he's on track to return sometime next week. The 26-year-old outfielder has been out since April 15 with a right wrist impingement.

Cory Luebke (elbow) has had his throwing program stopped for the second time this year in his attempt to return from Tommy John surgery.
Luebke was shut down in early March before resuming sessions of catch on April 1, and he had progressed to throwing off a mound before this latest setback. Obviously none of this bodes well for his mission to return to live major league games by the All-Star break.

Wieland, currently on the 60-day disabled list, is nine months removed from Tommy John surgery and will continued to be moved along slowly. If he can avoid setbacks, Wieland should be game-ready sometime after the All-Star break.
