Red Sox pitching prospect Anthony Ranaudo was shut down during Puerto Rican Winter League play after aggravating a right groin injury on November 28.
Ranaudo dealt with groin issues during the season, as well, though the Red Sox don't think this latest aggravation is anything serious. A sandwich round pick in 2010, Ranaudo was limited to just 37 2/3 innings with Double-A Portland this year due to injury. The 23-year-old should return to Double-A to start 2013.

Red Sox GM Ben Cherington said pitching prospect Anthony Ranaudo is likely to open 2012 at Double-A.
Ranaudo, 22, posted a 3.97 ERA and 117/46 K/BB ratio in 127 innings last season between Low-A Greenville and High-A Salem. Those aren't lights-out numbers, but the Red Sox believe the righty is a high-level talent, capable of moving quickly through their farm system.

Red Sox pitching prospect Anthony Ranaudo has been promoted from Low-A Greenville to High-A Salem.
Ranaudo, a 21-year-old right-hander, posted a 4-1 record, 3.33 ERA, 50 strikeouts and only 14 walks in 46 innings for Greenville. He was a supplemental first-round pick in 2010 and should continue climbing quickly.

Red Sox signed compensatory first-round pick RHP Anthony Ranaudo.
He'll receive a signing bonus of $2.55 million, multiple times above the recommended slot level for the No. 39 pick. After his performance in the Cape Cod League, it's hard to say the 20-year-old right-hander isn't worth it. The Red Sox found themselves a potential steal here.

Morales threw three innings in his last outing and will stretch it out to four innings Saturday. The lefty would have been activated by now had the Red Sox wanted him as a reliever, but they're stretching him out as a starter in case he's needed in that role. "Well, he'll likely get to four innings [on Saturday], and if we don't change course with his role, we'd like to get him to a minimum of five before we'd look to do something back here," manager John Farrell said.

Joel Hanrahan was upbeat Friday after he required Tommy John surgery in addition to flexor tendon surgery on Thursday.
Hanrahan will be in a cast for ten days, but will start the rehab process shortly thereafter. Either way, he's looking at a 12-to-14 month timetable for his return. Hanrahan, who is a free agent after the season, is a long way away from having any tangible fantasy value.
