With Rafael Betancourt sidelined, Rex Brothers earned his first save of the year by pitching a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.
Brothers has allowed just one run in 21 1/3 innings this season, so he was an obvious choice to close in Betancourt's place. Since it currently appears that Betancourt will avoid the DL, Brothers isn't guaranteed additional saves.

Rex Brothers hasn't allowed a run since April 6.
And that run, surrendered to the Padres, is the only blemish on his campaign to this point. Brothers has six holds, a 0.47 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 20/7 K/BB ratio over 21 appearances. He's been Colorado's best reliever, but closer Rafael Betancourt is also pitching well for the 24-21 Rockies. Brothers could be Colorado's full-time closer next season, but he likely won't earn saves in 2013 barring injury.

Rockies recalled LHP Rex Brothers from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Brothers has big time strikeout potential but needs to show more consistency with his command to be considered for a high-leverage role in the Rockies' bullpen. He's posted a 3.06 ERA and 1.265 WHIP in parts of four seasons in the minors.

Rockies optioned LHP Rex Brothers to Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Brothers entered the season as a sleeper for saves, but he got off to a woeful start, posting a 5.87 ERA and 2.28 WHIP over 15 1/3 innings. His 21 strikeouts show his upside, but he has to throw more strikes if he wants to cash in on his potential.

Michael Cuddyer (neck) will play two games in extended spring training this week and is expected to be activated from the disabled list Friday.
Cuddyer will fly to Arizona on Monday night and play in games on Tuesday and Wednesday. Barring any setbacks, he should be ready to go as soon as he's eligible on Friday. The 34-year-old has been sidelined since May 8 with a bulging disc in his neck.

It will be the first time he's thrown from the bump since landing on the disabled list. Francis' groin isn't fully healed, but he shouldn't be out too much longer as long as he continues to progress. Whether he'll have a rotation spot once healthy remains to be seen.

The move cleared a 40-man roster spot for new infielder Reid Brignac. Cabrera can be activated in late May.

Rafael Betancourt (groin) will not require a trip to the disabled list.
Betancourt left Tuesday's game with a tight right groin, but it's merely some scar tissue from a previous injury. He was given anti-inflammatory medication and could be back in there as soon as Friday. Rex Brothers and Wilton Lopez could be in the mix for save chances until he's ready to go, but it doesn't sound like he'll have a lengthy absence.
