Twins signed C/OF Eric Fryer to a minor league contract.
Fryer has been given a spring training invite. The 27-year-old opted for free agency after being designated for assignment by the Pirates. He hit a paltry .204/.257/.247 with no homers and 10 RBI in 65 games for Triple-A Indianapolis in 2012, and will likely serve as organizational depth for the Twins.

Eric Fryer has elected to become a free agent.
Fryer cleared waivers after being designated for assignment last week, but refused a minor league assignment. The 27-year-old backstop will look to latch on elsewhere.

Pirates designated C Eric Fryer for assignment.
The move clears the way for the newly-claimed Ali Solis on the 40-man roster. Fryer appeared in six games with the Pirates this season, but spent most of the year at the Triple-A level.

Darin Mastroianni will undergo surgery on Wednesday to repair a bone chip on his left ankle, and will be sidelined for at least six weeks.
It was a very discouraging sign when Mastroianni, who was already progressing slowly in his recovery, was uncomfortable testing his ankle during light sprints on Wednesday. He shouldn't be expected to return to the Twins until after the All-Star break and can safely be dropped in deeper mixed formats.

An MRI taken Wednesday on Tim Wood's right shoulder showed no signs of major structural damage.
Wood is headed to Minnesota for a second look. The 30-year-old has posted an ugly 8.68 ERA in 9 1/3 innings this season between High-A Fort Myers and Triple-A Rochester. He is currently on the MLB disabled list.
