Daniel Descalso went 3-for-3 with his first career grand slam and an RBI double in the Cardinals' 10-2 rout of the Padres on Tuesday.
Descalso's slam followed an intentional walk to Jon Jay. Descalso entered the game with an ugly .197/.265/.289 line, and he probably wouldn't have been in the lineup if not for David Freese's thumb injury. The home run was his seventh in 813 major league at-bats.

Daniel Descalso is batting just .167/.236/.258 through his first 72 plate appearances this season.
Matt Carpenter has been a standout this year at second base, which has limited Descalso's ability to get regular playing time. He carries zero fantasy relevance.

Daniel Descalso went 4-for-7 with a double, a pair of RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's 10-9, 16-inning marathon loss in Arizona.
Descalso could only watch Cliff Pennington's game-winning single scorch past him in the bottom of the 16th, but he certainly did more than his share to keep the game going as long as it did. In his third consecutive start, Descalso shrugged off a pair of off-nights (1-for-7 to begin the season) to lead St. Louis' offense. As long as David Freese (back) is out, he's worth starting in NL-only leagues. Expect him to improve on last year's .227/.303/.324 slash line.

Descalso played third base today, but it sounds like he'll shift back to second, with Matt Carpenter at third, while David Freese (back) sits out the first week or two of the season. Descalso figures to slide into a utility role afterwards.

The move was made in order to clear room on the 40-man roster for the addition of Carlos Martinez. Furcal is out for the season following Tommy John surgery.

David Freese (thumb) is out of the Cardinals' lineup again Wednesday.
He's now missed three straight games due to swelling around his right thumb where he needed three stitches for a small cut. The Cards are worried that cut could split open, so they're playing things cautiously. Freese could be back in there Friday after the off day Thursday. Matt Carpenter is at third again Wednesday, with Daniel Descalso covering second.

Jaime Garcia was diagnosed with a 30-40 percent tear of the labrum in his left shoulder.
Dr. James Andrews recommended surgery and reportedly expressed amazement that Garcia pitched as well as he did earlier this season under the circumstances. The Cardinals' team doctor will perform the shoulder procedure. It's safe to say that Garcia will not contribute in a meaningful way for the rest of the 2013 season.

Jake Wesbrook (elbow) played catch on flat ground on Friday.
The encouraging news is that he said his elbow felt fine afterwards. He attempted to throw a from a mound for the first time on Wednesday, but had to cut the session short after feeling lingering pain in his elbow. He's not on a specific throwing program at the moment, they'll continue to play it day-by-day based on how he's feeling. He's still not anywhere close to returning to the rotation.

Chris Carpenter (shoulder, neck) threw a successful bullpen session on Friday.
The Cardinals are considering allowing Carpenter to throw to live hitters on Tuesday as the next step in his recovery. While he's far from a sure thing, it looks like he's making tangible progress toward joining the Cardinals' rotation. Assuming no setbacks, he could return around the end of June.

Fernando Salas received a shot Thursday to help the inflammation in his right shoulder.
Salas doesn't have any structural damage, but the Cardinals will shut him down for a while and hope the shot helps to speed his recovery along. There's no timetable for his return.

The move is being made in order to clear space on the 40-man roster for John Gast, who will be called up to start Tuesday. Motte is out for the year following Tommy John surgery.
