Matt Carpenter went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple in Thursday's win over the Mets.
While Carpenter's 18-game hitting streak came to an end on Tuesday, he has now reached base in 22 straight games. His transition to second base has gone surprisingly well and he owns an impressive .327/.411/.478 batting line through 63 games. It would be a surprise if he didn't make the National League All-Star team next month.

Matt Carpenter reached base five times in the Cardinals' loss to the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
Carpenter was hit by a pitch three times -- a franchise-first for the long-tenured Cardinals. He also had a triple to lead off the bottom of the opening frame and a single in the bottom of the 11th. The St. Louis second baseman is now batting .323/.407/.470 with 47 runs scored in 55 games played this season.

Matt Carpenter went 2-for-3 with a home run and a stolen base as the Cardinals beat the Royals on Tuesday.
Carpenter also scored twice and worked a walk. The second baseman is now hitting .309/.394/.455 through 49 games and has been one of the most pleasant surprises thus far in the fantasy season. He seems to be entrenched at the top of the Cardinals lineup, too, so he should continue this huge run of production.

Matt Carpenter has hit safely in all but two May games.
The young infielder is third in the NL with 33 runs scored. Carpenter's slash line of .263/.333/.442 in April was solid, but he's really turned up the heat in May, batting .375/.470/.482. If Carpenter can convert some of his doubles (14) into home runs (three), he'll eradicate a fantasy weakness to this point. Despite his hot stick, Carpenter has driven in only 14 runs. He's not a threat to run, either.

Garcia had season-ending surgery this month to repair a labrum tear in his left shoulder. This move was made to clear a 40-man roster spot for Michael Wacha.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said that Chris Carpenter felt some back stiffness during a long bullpen session Sunday.
It's not clear if Carpenter will have to scale back his throwing program, but he'll likely need a few more bullpen sessions before the Cardinals think about the possibility of a rehab assignment. While it once looked like the veteran right-hander could return in late June, sometime during the second half appears more realistic at this point.

John Gast has been diagnosed with a strained left lat.
The Cardinals were encouraged by the diagnosis. "The timetable is to be determined, but the good news is that it's not the shoulder or the elbow," general manager John Mozeliak said. "Hopefully, it's something that won't take too long. With a lat, it can be up to a month or a month and a half. We'll see." Michael Wacha is taking Gast's spot in the rotation.

Salas has been sidelined for nearly a month due to right shoulder irritation. The Cardinals will likely want to see how he responds to throwing on back-to-back days before bringing him back from the disabled list.
