With both Jason Grilli and Mark Melancon unavailable, Tony Watson nailed down his first career save Thursday, giving up one run over two innings in a win over the Phillies.
Watson allowed a hit and a run in the eighth and a leadoff double in the ninth, but he then retired three straight to close out the two-run victory. The southpaw has a 3.00 ERA and 0.83 WHIP for the season and appears to be third in line for saves in Pittsburgh.

Making his first appearance in three weeks, Tony Watson gave up three runs in an inning Wednesday against the Braves.
Watson figured to be a lock for the Pirates pen after finishing with a 3.38 ERA in 53 1/3 innings as a lefty specialist last year, but he's dealing with some largely undisclosed issues right now and he's given up seven runs in 2 2/3 innings this spring. He does have an option remaining, so the Pirates may choose to send him down until he gets things sorted out.

Tony Watson is scheduled to return to action Sunday.
Watson hasn't pitched in a game since February 28 due to unspecified mechanical and physical issues. However, it appears that he is over the hump.

Tony Watson hasn't thrown in a game since February 28 due to what he calls "mechanical and physical issues."
Watson declined to elaborate, so the severity of his physical issue isn't known. It's also a mystery when he'll pitch next. The 27-year-old had a 3.38 ERA and 53/23 K/BB ratio over 53 1/3 innings last season and was expected to be the Pirates' primary left-hander out of the bullpen in 2013.

Starling Marte went 2-for-5 with a triple and a run scored as the Pirates beat the Reds 4-0 on Tuesday.
Marte was the catalyst of the Pirates offense on Tuesday. The triple led off the game and was the Pirates' only extra-base hit of the night. He later scored before singling in a run of his own in the seventh inning. Marte also stole a base in the game, his 21st of the season.

A.J. Burnett said Friday that he has a Grade 1 tear in his right calf.
Burnett, who was placed on the disabled list Thursday, said he currently can't put any weight on his leg. There's no clear timetable for his return, but the veteran right-hander said that he hopes it's "not a six-week thing." The Pirates and fantasy owners are hoping the game, but it doesn't sound like he'll be back when he's first eligible.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Monday that Wandy Rodriguez (forearm) "felt good" while throwing off the mound Monday.
It's not clear what the next step will be, but it could be enough for the Pirates to send him out on a rehab start. Rodriguez has been sidelined since June 5 with left forearm tightness.

James McDonald (shoulder) might be moved to the bullpen when he is activated from the disabled list.
Gerrit Cole's promotion and Charlie Morton's return created a potential logjam in the Pittsburgh rotation and McDonald is probably going to have to be the odd man out. The 28-year-old righty owns a 5.76 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 29 2/3 innings this season. He is on the 15-day DL currently because of inflammation in his shoulder.

Karstens will be shut down for a minimum of 10-12 weeks as he recovers from the injury. He had been aiming to join the Pirates' starting rotation in early June, but is now unlikely to return this season.
