Cubs optioned OF Dave Sappelt to Triple-A Iowa.
Sappelt, who was acquired from the Reds in the Sean Marshall deal, batted .216 (8-for-37) with four extra-base hits (one homer) and a stolen base this spring. The speedy 25-year-old could find his way onto the Cubs' bench at some point this season.

Cubs acquired OF Dave Sappelt from the Reds in the Sean Marshall trade.
Sappelt doesn't get much love from scouts but has continued to hit in the minors, sporting a career .309/.362/.459 batting line. He batted .243/.289/.318 in a 107 at-bat cup of coffee with the Reds this past season and will have a shot to win a spot on Chicago's bench.

Dave Sappelt went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a walk and two runs scored in a victory against the Cubs Tuesday.
Sappelt has hit safely in his last six games. Sappelt, one of March's biggest surprises when he hit .564 with three homers in 39 at-bats for the Reds, is hitting .270/.299/.338 in 74 at-bats since he was promoted a month ago. He hasn't hit a homer or stolen a base, however, and isn't much of a fantasy option even in NL-only leagues.

Reds purchased the contract of OF Dave Sappelt from Triple-A Louisville.
Sappelt turned heads during spring training by batting .564 with three homers in 39 at-bats. He's had a nice year for Louisville, hitting .313 with a .387 to go along with seven home runs and a .415 mark over his last 10 games. Sappelt should get some starts in left field while Chris Heisey is sidelined.

Cubs placed C Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list with a slight tear in his left meniscus.
He'll need arthroscopic surgery, which will sideline him for around three weeks. The Cubs acquired Koyie Hill from the Reds earlier in the day for depth and officially purchased his contract from the minors. With Steve Clevenger (oblique) still out and Welington Castillo out for a week with a mild MCL sprain in his right knee, Hill and Blake Lalli will share catching duties for now.

Steve Clevenger (oblique) is slated to play nine innings with Triple-A Iowa on Monday and Wednesday before being reevaluated.
Clevenger is 1-for-4 over his first two rehab games. Barring any setbacks, he figures to rejoin the Cubs late next week. The 26-year-old should get significant playing time with Geovany Soto and Welington Castillo both on the shelf with knee injuries.

Castillo was diagnosed with a mild MCL sprain last week and will need at least 15 days of recovery time. Blake Lalli has taken over the Cubs' backup catcher role.

It's the same condition that he's dealt with all season, as well as last year with the Rockies. Stewart, who is batting just .197/.286/.336 with four homers this season, is considered day-to-day. Adrian Cardenas is playing third base in his place.

Carlos Marmol (hamstring) tossed a scoreless inning Friday in his first minor league rehab appearance with Triple-A Iowa.
Marmol allowed one hit and a walk while striking out one. He threw nine out of 16 pitches for strikes. The rehabbing right-hander is expected to make one more appearance Sunday before coming off the disabled list. He will not return to the closer role upon his return.

Cubs placed RHP Marcos Mateo on the 60-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.
Mateo came down with a bit of soreness in his forearm near the end of spring training. He missed a majority of 2011 with forearm troubles, so the Cubs are going to play it as safe as possible with the righty reliever.

The strain is being referred to as "moderate," so it could be more than a minimum stay on the DL for the Rule 5 pick. Scott Maine takes his spot on the roster.
