Oscar Taveras (ankle) is expected to return to action at Triple-A Memphis by the middle of this week.
Taveras injured his right ankle last Sunday while attempting to steal second base. X-rays taken in the immediate aftermath showed no structural damage, but the Cardinals have understandably decided to play it safe with their top prospect. Taveras, 20, was batting .317 with an .831 OPS through his first 31 games this season for the Memphis Redbirds. He should reach the major league level at some point in 2013.

Oscar Taveras is day-to-day with a right ankle injury.
Taveras was injured Sunday with Triple-A Memphis while attempting to steal a base. X-rays revealed no structural damage, but it's possible he could be placed on the minor league disabled list. Taveras is batting .314/.349/.483 through his first 30 games this season.

No word yet on the severity of the injury. Taveras was removed in the ninth inning after a steal attempt. The Cardinals should provide an update on his status soon.

Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes that the Cardinals "aren’t going to trade outfield prospect Oscar Taveras to Texas" for Jurickson Profar.
Swapping the top prospects would make some sense for each organization because the Cardinals need a shortstop and the Rangers could soon use a power-hitting outfielder. But there's no momentum toward a deal at this time. We can't say for certain whether the Rangers and Cardinals have even had a discussion about it.

Cardinals placed LHP Jaime Garcia on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain.
Garcia has been dealing with shoulder issues for over a year and will visit Dr. James Andrews to try to get some answers. Surgery could ultimately be the course taken. The Cardinals are calling up reliever Mitchell Boggs on Saturday to fill their vacant roster spot but will have to add a new starting pitcher soon. Maybe 2012 first-rounder Michael Wacha will get a chance.

Jake Westbrook (elbow) plans to resume throwing from a mound on Tuesday.
It comes after he made 25 flat-ground throws from 60 feet on Sunday and 50 throws from 90 feet on Monday. Westbrook seems likely to need a rehab start or two before returning, but there's no word on when that might take place. He'll likely be back in early June if he can avoid a setback.

Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Chris Carpenter is conditioning himself to be a starter.
When it was initially revealed that Carpenter was going to attempt a comeback this season, the general assumption was that he would be aiming to join the St. Louis bullpen. But the veteran right-hander is stretching himself out in case a spot opens up in the Cardinals' starting rotation. The remarkable story continues.
