Astros agreed to terms with No. 1 overall pick RHP Mark Appel.
The agreement is for $6.35 million according to Baseball America's Jim Callis, a figure that's approximately $1.44 million less than the assigned slot value for the top overall pick. Even so, the Stanford right-hander made himself quite a bit of money by opting not to sign with the Pirates after being drafted No. 7 overall last year. He'll be a quick mover within the Astros' system and could surface as early as the 2014 season.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Astros have agreed to terms with first-round pick RHP Mark Appel.
The deal is expected to be worth roughly $6.5 million, which is significantly less than the assigned slot value for the No. 1 overall pick of $7.7904 million. Appel displayed elite-level command in college and has frontline starter potential. He should find his way into the Astros' rotation by the 2014 season.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports that the Astros are nearing a deal with first overall pick Mark Appel.
Passan says Appel will get more than twice as much as last year's $3.8 million offer from the Pirates, indicating that he should receive around the slot value of $7.7904 million. A deal could be announced as soon as the middle of next week. Appel should move quickly through the Astros' system.

Astros selected Stanford RHP Mark Appel with the first overall pick in the 2013 draft.
Appel, who went back to school for his Senior season after being drafted eighth overall by the Pirates last year and failing to reach a deal, is the most advanced prospect in the draft. Using a mid-90s fastball, a slider and a changeup, he projects as a No. 2 or 3 starter, and he should contribute at some point during 2014. He went 10-4 with a 2.12 ERA and a 130/23 K/BB ratio in 106 1/3 innings for Stanford this year.

Paul Clemens left Monday's appearance with a right pinkie injury.
Clemens was struck by a comebacker and appeared to dislocate the finger, but the Astros' trainer popped it back in place and he stayed in to face one more batter. The club reconsidered after that, though, and decided to remove him. Clemens saved the bullpen with 5 1/3 scoreless relief frames after Erik Bedard lasted only 1/3 of an inning.

Astros placed RHP Edgar Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 26, with a right shoulder strain.
Gonzalez complained of soreness earlier this week, so he'll now get some extended rest. Josh Fields will replace him in the Astros' bullpen.

Alex White will undergo Tommy John surgery.
White showed diminished velocity this spring and was diagnosed with a strained pitching elbow, but the injury turned out to be worse than that. The young right-hander will obviously miss all of 2013 and might not be ready for the start of 2014.
