Rangers general manager Jon Daniels indicated Thursday that Joey Gallo likely needs more time in the minors.
Daniels gave his thoughts on Gallo when asked if he was a threat to win the starting first base job in the spring. "We think Joey is going to be a very good player in this league, but when is still too early to say," said Daniels. "Ideally, he'd probably get a little more time, unless there is a big jump like Ryan Rua took last year." Gallo socked 25 homers with an .896 OPS in 102 games this season in Triple-A, but he went just 1-for-25 with 19 strikeouts in the majors. He doesn't turn 23 until later this month, so the Rangers still have high hopes for him in the long run, but it's a lot to ask him to be a productive regular right away. At the very least, they aren't going to put too much pressure on him going into the spring. Mitch Moreland is a free agent this winter, so Daniels mentioned Ryan Rua and Jurickson Profar as possible alternatives at first base. Thu, Nov 3, 2016 06:14:00 PM
