Cardinals reassigned RHP Michael Wacha to minor league camp.
Wacha turned a lot of heads this spring by compiling an excellent 15/1 K/BB over 11 2/3 scoreless innings. The 21-year-old will head down to the minors so that he can start every fifth day, but he's clearly on the fast track to the big leagues.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Thursday that while prospect right-hander Michael Wacha is "unlikely" to make the Opening Day roster, he has "opened eyes" this spring and deserves more innings.
Wacha, last year's first-round pick, has an 11/1 K/BB ratio over 7 2/3 innings this spring and has only allowed an unearned run. The 21-year-old right-hander is better off getting more seasoning in the minors for now, but he's clearly on the fast track to the majors.

Michael Wacha impressed again Monday, pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings and striking out three against the Twins.
Wacha has fanned 11 while allowing just an unearned run in 7 2/3 innings this spring. The Cardinals have ruled him out for a spot on the Opening Day roster, but it's going to be tough to keep him down for long if he keeps throwing like this.

The Cardinals are not considering Michael Wacha as part of the competition for the No. 5 spot in the rotation.
A first-round pick in last year's draft, Wacha has looked terrific in his first two Grapefruit League appearances, striking out eight and walking no one while allowing just an unearned run over five innings. Pitching coach Derek Lilliquist said he "could see Wacha contributing" at some point this season, but they're not ready to throw him into the competition with Shelby Miller, Trevor Rosenthal and Joe Kelly. He had been slated to begin the year in the High-A rotation, but it's possible he'll now go to a higher level.

Jaime Garcia was diagnosed with a 30-40 percent tear of the labrum in his left shoulder.
Dr. James Andrews recommended surgery and reportedly expressed amazement that Garcia pitched as well as he did earlier this season under the circumstances. The Cardinals' team doctor will perform the shoulder procedure. It's safe to say that Garcia will not contribute in a meaningful way for the rest of the 2013 season.

Jake Westbrook (elbow) will seek a second opinion next week, likely from Dr. James Andrews.
It's certainly not good news after Westbrook claimed to feel fine after playing catch on Friday. He had cut a previous bullpen session short earlier in the week due to discomfort, so there's definitely something amiss with the elbow. The Cardinals were originally hopeful he would miss the minimum 15 days, but at this point there isn't even a timetable for his return.

Chris Carpenter (shoulder, neck) did not feel good after his latest bullpen session so the Cardinals are backing him off his current throwing program.
Carpenter was scheduled to face live hitters for the first time on Tuesday, but that's not going to happen anymore. The 38-year-old right-hander will continue throwing long toss and bullpen sessions until he feels like he's truly ready to take the next step. He has made just three starts since the start of the 2012 season (not including the playoffs) due to nerve irritation in his neck and shoulder.

John Gast left in the second inning of his start Saturday against the Dodgers due to left shoulder tightness.
Gast's velocity was down from the first pitch, so it's not surprising to find out that he was dealing with an injury. If he has to make a trip to the disabled list, reliever Joe Kelly or last year's first-round pick Michael Wacha could be options to replace him in the rotation.

Fernando Salas received a shot Thursday to help the inflammation in his right shoulder.
Salas doesn't have any structural damage, but the Cardinals will shut him down for a while and hope the shot helps to speed his recovery along. There's no timetable for his return.
