Cubs outfield prospect Albert Almora will be sidelined until late May after breaking the hamate bone in his left hand.
He'll undergo surgery to remove the bone. Though the Cubs believe Almora, 18, could potentially be a fast riser, he's still not remotely close to being big league-ready, so the injury isn't that big of a deal.

Cubs signed OF Albert Almora.
Almora was selected No. 6 overall in last month's First-Year Player Draft. The 18-year-old outfielder receives a $3.9 million bonus, well above the $3.25 million slot recommendation for the pick. He's expected to report to the Cubs' complex in Mesa, Arizona before beginning his pro career. The Cubs are $373,800 above their $7,933,900 bonus pool for the first 10 rounds of the 2012 draft, so they'll pay a 75-percent tax on the overage due to the new draft rules.

The Cubs have agreed to terms with No. 6 overall pick Albert Almora on a $3.9 million contract, reports Jim Callis of Baseball America.
Major League Baseball recommended a $3.25 million bonus for the sixth overall selection. Almora is considered to have great makeup, good polish and plenty of tools. While he was not considered in the same class as Byron Buxton or Carlos Correa, Almora, an elite defensive center fielder, has been compared to Orioles superstar Adam Jones. Six first-round picks remain unsigned with Friday's signing deadline upon us: Kevin Gausman (6, BAL), Mark Appel (8, PIT), Andrew Heaney (9, MIA), Lucas Giolito (16, WAS), Richie Shaffer (25, TB) and Ty Hensley (30, NYY).

Theo Epstein and company have been linked to Almora throughout the process and their infatuation proved not to be a mirage. Nobody would have thought Mark Appel would be available to the Cubs, but Epstein and Hoyer stuck to their guns anyway.

He's also throwing from 120-130 feet and is expected to start swinging a bat early next week. Clevenger is on the 60-day DL and won't be eligible to return until mid-June. He should have no trouble being ready at that time, though he's not a given to return to the big club.

It was Baker's first time throwing since he was shut down near the end of spring training with a right elbow strain. The Cubs will know a lot more about his timetable once he starts to build up his workload.

Rafael Dolis has been called up to replace him in the bullpen. Camp owns an ugly 7.56 ERA and 12/6 K/BB ratio across 16 2/3 innings of work this season.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum said Tuesday that Arodys Vizcaino (elbow) is a couple weeks away from appearing in a game.
He is presumably referring to an extended spring training game. Vizcaino, who will continue his rehab with the Cubs rather than at the club's spring training facility, is expected back around midseason.
