Reds sent INF/OF Arismendy Alcantara outright to Double-A Pensacola.
Alcantara cleared waivers after being designated for assignment. The former top prospect has flopped at the major league level, hitting just .189/.235/.315 over parts of four seasons.
Mon, Aug 14, 2017 04:22:00 PM
Reds designated INF/OF Arismendy Alcantara for assignment.
The 25-year-old slashed a meager .171/.187/.248 with a 38/2 K/BB ratio in 108 plate appearances with the Reds. He's an intriguing talent, but has shown he isn't capable of handling major league pitching at this stage. There's a chance he could still attract interest on waivers though.
Sat, Aug 12, 2017 03:35:00 PM
Arismendy Alcantara went 3-for-3 with his first steal Thursday against the Pirates.
Alcantara had just 22 plate appearances in the Reds' 27 games before getting a rare start today. He could be interesting in NL-only leagues at some point, but it will probably take a Zack Cozart trade.
Thu, May 4, 2017 04:40:00 PM
Arismendy Alcantara went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Saturday's split-squad Cactus League loss to the Cubs.
Alcantara's two-run home run in the fourth inning was not in and of itself able to propel the Reds to victory, but that aside, the dinger was his third of the spring. He has a shot at the Opening Day roster as a potential utility piece after hitting .278/.325/.467 with 12 homers and 32 steals in 108 minor league games last season. The Reds picked him up off waivers from the A's in early October.

10-Day DL
Eugenio Suarez (thumb) has begun taking groundballs and gripping a bat with his left hand.
"I don't throw. I just take the ground balls and put them on the side," Suarez said Tuesday. "I try to grip the bat to see how it feels, but no swings or throwing yet. I will grab the ball and bat and see how much I can squeeze. That's all we're doing right now." The third baseman landed on the disabled list April 9 with a fracture in his right thumb. He's likely to be sidelined through at least early-to-mid May.

Anthony DeSclafani
60-Day DL
Anthony DeSclafani (oblique) has been cleared for mound work.
DeSclafani missed most of spring training with a left oblique strain and basically has to start all over with the progression of bullpen sessions, live batting practice, simulated work, and then eventually minor league rehab appearances. He's on the 60-day disabled list and can't return before May 28. The 28-year-old right-hander hasn't appeared in a major league game since 2016.
Apr 18

Rookie Davis
60-Day DL
Reds placed RHP Rookie Davis on the 60-day disabled list with a right hip injury.
The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Jairo Labourt. Davis is still rehabbing from surgery last October to repair the labrum and remove a bone spur in his right hip.

10-Day DL
Michael Lorenzen (shoulder) is long-tossing from a distance of 90 feet.
It's at least a sign of progress, but Lorenzen has a long way to go in his recovery from a right teres major muscle (shoulder) strain. MLB.com's Mark Sheldon expects the Reds to take it slow with Lorenzen and have the 26-year-old setup man "work on his mechanics" for a while at the Reds' spring training complex "in an effort to prevent another strain." He could be out through much of May.
Apr 18
3
David Hernandez
10-Day DL
David Hernandez (shoulder) is expected to begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A Louisville.
Reds manager Bryan Price told the media Wednesday that Hernandez could be activated after only "2-3 outings" on the farm. The 32-year-old setup man had some issues with his shoulder toward the end of spring training and was placed on the disabled list on Opening Day. He signed a two-year, $5 million contract with Cincinnati in January to work in front of closer Raisel Iglesias.

Kevin Shackelford (forearm) has resumed throwing.
Manager Bryan Price expects him to throw a bullpen session within the next couple of days. Shackelford has been battling a forearm strain since mid-March. He'll return to a setup role in the Reds' bullpen when healthy.
