Cardinals optioned RHP Michael Blazek to Triple-A Memphis.
Blazek, 24, wasn't expected to make the club this spring due to the team's bullpen depth anyway, so he'll return to Triple-A Memphis, where he made two appearances last season. Overall, Blazek had a 4.43 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A in 2012.

Cardinals purchased the contract of RHP Michael Blazek from Triple-A Memphis.
Blazek, 23, had a 4.43 ERA and 84/36 K/BB ratio over 83 1/3 innings between Double- and Triple-A this year. He's likely nothing more than a bullpen arm, but the Cardinals didn't want to leave him exposed for the Rule 5 Draft.

Jaime Garcia was diagnosed with a 30-40 percent tear of the labrum in his left shoulder.
Dr. James Andrews recommended surgery and reportedly expressed amazement that Garcia pitched as well as he did earlier this season under the circumstances. The Cardinals' team doctor will perform the shoulder procedure. It's safe to say that Garcia will not contribute in a meaningful way for the rest of the 2013 season.

Jake Westbrook (elbow) played catch on flat ground on Friday.
The encouraging news is that he said his elbow felt fine afterwards. He attempted to throw a from a mound for the first time on Wednesday, but had to cut the session short after feeling lingering pain in his elbow. He's not on a specific throwing program at the moment, they'll continue to play it day-by-day based on how he's feeling. He's still not anywhere close to returning to the rotation.

Chris Carpenter (shoulder, neck) did not feel good after his latest bullpen session so the Cardinals are backing him off his current throwing program.
Carpenter was scheduled to face live hitters for the first time on Tuesday, but that's not going to happen anymore. The 38-year-old right-hander will continue throwing long toss and bullpen sessions until he feels like he's truly ready to take the next step. He has made just three starts since the start of the 2012 season (not including the playoffs) due to nerve irritation in his neck and shoulder.

Fernando Salas received a shot Thursday to help the inflammation in his right shoulder.
Salas doesn't have any structural damage, but the Cardinals will shut him down for a while and hope the shot helps to speed his recovery along. There's no timetable for his return.
