Cardinals prospect RHP Alex Reyes struck out a career-high 13 batters in six innings on Wednesday for High-A Palm Beach.
Reyes was the losing pitcher in the game after allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk, though the flame-throwing right-hander did pop 101 mph on the radar gun in the outing. He now ranks second in the minor leagues with 90 strikeouts, and it was the fourth time in 12 starts he’s punched out double digits. Few pitchers in the minor leagues can match the upside of the 20-year-old Reyes, who owns a 2.08 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 90/30 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 60 2/3 innings (12 starts) this season. Reyes still has a ways to go in terms of refining his command and executing his secondary pitches, but he has all the necessary ingredients to serve as a front-of-the-rotation starter at maturity.
