J.R. Smith will decline his $2.9 million player option for 2013-14, making him an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
One day after the Knicks' season ended, Smith said that he wanted to "retire as a Knick." New York could sign him for four years at $4.9 million per season, using their Early Bird rights, and an anonymous source told ESPN that it's "likely" J.R. will stay with the Knicks. He was awful in the playoffs but finished with regular season averages of 18.1 points, 1.9 threes, 5.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.3 steals, en route to Sixth Man of the Year honors.

J.R. Smith played through the postseason with a swollen left knee "that contained fluid buildup," a source told the New York Post.
According to the source, Smith is "likely" to have his knee drained at some point during the next two weeks. While this would certainly help to explain Smith's struggles in the playoffs, we're not buying into the idea that the knee was solely responsible for his shortcomings. He's expected to be fine well in advance of training camp, but it's unknown where he'll be. He has until June 25 to exercise his player option for next year, or he'll be an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.

J.R. Smith is expected to decline his player option for next season and test free agency, according to the New York Post.
The writing has been on the wall with Smith and it would be a huge shock to see him opt in considering he can make more money as an unrestricted free agent. The Knicks can offer him a four-year deal at a starting price around $5 million annually, but that might not be enough to retain Smith, who will be a desired commodity on the open market.

New York Post
J.R. Smith is expected to test the market as a free agent this summer, but he said after Saturday's season-ending loss that he hopes to "retire as a Knick."
Mike Woodson's faith in J.R. didn't waver despite his sub-30 percent shooting in the second round, and the Knicks would presumably love to keep him. The catch is that New York's pricy roster could incur huge penalties under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, curbing their ability to spend money retaining players. Smith, this year's Sixth-Man of the Year, can earn much more than his $2.9 million player option for next season, and it will be interesting to see how much demand there is for him this summer.

The Knicks have not updated the status of Carmelo Anthony (shoulder) since revealing he had a small tear in his labrum.
The initial plan was to see if the injury would heal without surgery and the team would reevaluate him in three weeks, but it's been nearly four weeks and we still haven't heard if Anthony will need surgery. It could be seen as a positive sign, but given the Knicks history of how they disclose injuries, we can't say for certain. Surgery could sideline Anthony up to three months if he goes under the knife.
