Anderson Varejao recently developed a blood clot in his lung and is out for the season.
A bad break gets worse for Varejao, who is now officially done for the season, according to the Cavs. Varejao just had surgery for a small split in his right quad, and he is expected to remain at the Cleveland Clinic to be treated and monitored. The good news is that he's expected to make a full recovery. This locks Tristan Thompson and Tyler Zeller in as the starting frontcourt for the remainder of the season. Thompson is averaging 10.3 points, 9.3 rebounds, 0.8 steals and 0.7 blocks as the starting power forward, while Zeller is averaging 10.3 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.6 blocks as the starting center.

Varejao's timetable remains 6-8 weeks, during which time the Cavs will rely on Tristan Thompson and rookie Tyler Zeller for frontcourt production. Fantasy owners cruising into the playoffs might be able to keep him until March, but in most situations he belongs on the waiver wire.

Anderson Varejao (knee) needs surgery to repair "a small longitudinal split in the vastus medialis" and is expected t be out for 6-8 weeks.
It's a split quad muscle for Varejao. This is just a brutal blow for owners who were holding on to Varejao expecting him to be back in the near future. We suspected that the injury was more severe than a knee contusion, and an MRI revealed exactly that. Tyler Zeller and Tristan Thompson are locked into major roles for the foreseeable future, while the injury likely lessens the interest in Varejao on the trade market.

Byron Scott has no idea when Anderson Varejao (knee) will be ready to play.
"But I'm hoping I'm not talking like it's long-term or for the season, or anything like that," he said. "I'm still optimistic that he'll be able to play this year until the doctors tell me something different." Varejao's knee injury was supposed to be minor, but the big man is clearly dealing with something more serious than the team has let on.
