Mark Cuban is funding a Southern Methodist University study on flopping in basketball.
Cuban, a loud proponent of cutting down the flopping in the NBA, is putting up $100,000 of his own money. Over the next 18 months, researchers will use motion capture techniques and video to try to identify what is a legit collision and what is fake. "The research findings could conceivably contribute to video reviews of flopping and the subsequent assignment of fines," SMU biomechanics expert Peter G. Weyand said. Commissioner David Stern has already said that stronger flopping penalties will be discussed when the NBA's competition committee meets next week.

David Stern said on Thursday that the fines for flops aren't enough.
"It isn't enough," Stern said. "You're not going to cause somebody to stop it for $5,000 when the average salary is $5.5 million." Stern makes some sense here. If the average American makes $43K per year, a fine flop would equate to about $39.09, which is barely enough to by a 2013 NBA Draft cap. Players can expect the fines to increase next season.

The NBA will explore an off-site instant replay system for next season.
"We have asked the fans and they say it's absolutely worth the delay," David Stern said. "You have an obligation to get it right." The system would have officials at a off-site location look at replays of disputed plays when requested to do so and hopefully give a prompt answer to the play in question. Based on Stern's quote, it seems likely this system will be in place for next season.

The NBA is reviewing the officiating in Game 4 of the Pacers-Heat series, league sources told CBSSports.com's Ken Berger.
There were several calls of note Tuesday night, including a blown 24-second call on which replays showed Roy Hibbert's shot clearly hitting the rim. The shot clock should've reset, but instead the Heat went on an 11-2 run to tie the game up. At the end of that run, David West struck a driving Dwyane Wade across the body, which the league is reviewing to see if it should be upgrade to a flagrant foul. The referees for the game were Rodney Mott, Derrick Stafford and Joe Crawford, who isn't exactly new to controversy. More as we know it.
