Ely never had much of a chance to make the regular season roster, despite the Mavericks' frontcourt injuries.

Mavericks sign Melvin Ely.
The Mavericks need bodies in the frontcourt with their starting tandem of Dirk Nowitzki (knee) and Chris Kaman (calf) dealing with injuries. He still belongs on the waiver wire in all leagues.

Melvin Ely has agreed to a non-guaranteed deal with the Mavericks.
Ely is competing with guys like Eddy Curry and Chris Douglas-Roberts for the Mavericks' final roster spot, which isn't even available until Delonte West is jettisoned. Expect him to be waived this weekend.

The Bobcats have waived Melvin Ely.
Ely was signed just over a week ago but missed time due to dehydration, and that may have cost him a chance to make the final roster. Taylor Griffin and Durrell Summers were also let go, although Summers is expected to head to the NBDL.

Sidelined
Roddy Beaubois underwent successful hand surgery on Wednesday and is out for the season.
The odds of Beaubois returning are "extremely slim," so we'll consider him out for the season for all intents and purposes. Beaubois will be a free agent in the offseason, and it's hard to see him returning to the Mavs. Dallas will roll with Mike James and Darren Collison at point guard.
