Patriots agreed to terms with SS Adrian Wilson, formerly of the Cardinals, on a three-year contract.
Wilson was one of many veterans the Patriots hosted for a Friday visit. After grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 2 safety in 2011, Wilson fell all the way to No. 59 in 2012 while being benched from Arizona's nickel defense midway through the season. 33-year-old Wilson is an in-the-box safety who will likely play early downs before being replaced by some combination of Steve Gregory and Tavon Wilson in passing situations. Wilson will probably be hailed as Bill Belichick's "next Rodney Harrison," but it's highly, highly unlikely he'll have 50 percent of that kind of impact.

Free agent SS Adrian Wilson will visit the Patriots.
It's Wilson's first known visit since being released by the Cardinals six days ago, and the 30-plus-year-old free agent safeties aren't getting much play, yet. 33-year-old Wilson's play fell off last season as he was demoted out of the nickel defense, but he can still be a solid presence as an in-the-box safety.

Free agent SS Adrian Wilson plans to play at least one more season.
Wilson, going on age 34, hopes to land with a West Coast team who'll likely be in playoff contention. Very limited at this stage of his career, box-safety Wilson could perhaps intrigue a club like Denver or San Diego if he's willing to play for near the league minimum. Wilson is a two-down strong safety.

Cardinals released SS Adrian Wilson.
The move saves $3 million in salary cap room. Wilson said in December that he didn't expect to be back for a 13th year in the desert, and he was right. The 2001 third-round pick is just one year removed from an elite campaign, but saw his play slip in 2012. Wilson was demoted out of nickel packages in November. With the safety market loaded with experienced talent, Wilson may have to wait a while for a new deal. He's going on age 34.

ESPN Boston agrees with the Boston Herald that Patriots WR Julian Edelman is not a lock for a roster spot.
The Patriots waited nearly a month before re-signing Edelman to a contract that includes no guaranteed money, while a setback with his troublesome foot has him questionable for the beginning of camp. Edelman's experience in the Patriots' system and special-teams prowess should give him a leg up on the likes of Donald Jones, Lavelle Hawkins and Michael Jenkins, but only if he's healthy.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft confirmed Rob Gronkowski's fourth arm surgery went "as good as he could have hoped."
Per Kraft, Gronk will be back "as soon as possible." Right now, "as soon as possible" appears to be mid-August. That's because Gronk is tentatively slated for "minor" back surgery sometime in the next 3-4 weeks. Like Robert Griffin III, Gronk's Week 1 status will be hard to accurately gauge before training camp.

ESPN Boston reports that "word is" Aaron Hernandez (shoulder) can expect a four-month recovery period.
Hernandez underwent a "minor scope" almost three weeks ago, and he is not expected to participate in OTAs or minicamp. It's possible he could even open training camp on the PUP list. There remains plenty of time for Hernandez to be ready for Week 1. The Patriots will likely bring him along slowly.
