Patriots released TE Alge Crumpler.
Combined, the Patriots' cuts of Crumpler, Nick Kaczur, and Ty Warren saved $8.9 million in base salary. The salary cap savings are lower, however, particularly for Warren. Crumpler underwent major offseason shoulder surgery and probably wasn't fully recovered. The 33-year-old might return later on.

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss expects the Patriots to keep TE Alge Crumpler in the final year of his contract.
Crumpler's pass-catching skills have vanished and he's coming off "extensive" shoulder surgery with a $2.4 million salary. We don't consider him a lock to return -- especially after the Pats drafted blocking specialist Lee Smith -- but Crumpler does have value when healthy. He's a ferocious run blocker.

Patriots TE Alge Crumpler underwent "extensive" shoulder surgery in late January.
Crumpler reportedly played through the injury all year. Whether he'll be ready for training camp is unclear, but the fact that he got surgery out of the way so early in the offseason increases Crumpler's chances. Now 33 years old, Crumpler is essentially a sixth offensive lineman. He played in all 16 games, but caught just six passes for 52 yards and two TDs in 2010.

The Patriots are expected to retain 33-year-old blocking tight end Alge Crumpler for 2011.
Crumpler is due $2.4M in his contract year. The veteran graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 3 run-blocking tight end, a role he will continue in next season. Crumpler is also a mentor for Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.

The Patriots have tweaked Julian Edelman's contract, converting the majority of his workout bonus to a roster bonus.
Edelman is missing time during the offseason workout program and OTAs due to a re-aggravation of the injury he suffered to his right foot at the end of last season. His status for the beginning of camp is also in question. Edelman is not a lock to make the Patriots' 53-man roster.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Patriots "(don't) know" how serious Rob Gronkowski's back injury is.
"I wish I knew as much as you'd like me to know," were the words of owner Robert Kraft. Rapoport believes the Pats should consider placing Gronk on the reserve/PUP list, which would hold him out for the first six games of the season. Depending on how Gronk's expected back operation goes, they may not have a choice.

ESPN Boston reports that "word is" Aaron Hernandez (shoulder) can expect a four-month recovery period.
Hernandez underwent a "minor scope" almost three weeks ago, and he is not expected to participate in OTAs or minicamp. It's possible he could even open training camp on the PUP list. There remains plenty of time for Hernandez to be ready for Week 1. The Patriots will likely bring him along slowly.
