Panthers hired Ken Dorsey as QBs coach.
We don't normally post position coach hires, but it's notable because Dorsey helped train Cam Newton in the run up to the 2011 draft. Apparently approving of his work, the Panthers hired him as a scout later that year. Dorsey is replacing Mike Shula, who was promoted to offensive coordinator after Rob Chudzinski left for Cleveland. A former Miami Hurricanes standout, Dorsey played under Chudzinski at both "The U" and with the Browns. Just 31, he has no previous coaching experience.

Panthers promoted QBs coach Mike Shula to offensive coordinator.
Don's son has a spotty track record as offensive overseer, but this hire wasn't about his track record and past league rankings as a coordinator. It's all about continuity. Tabbed over Hue Jackson and Pat Shurmur, Shula will keep the basic elements of outgoing OC Rob Chudzinski's offense in place, boding well for face-of-the-franchise Cam Newton. Shula also has an obvious relationship with head coach Ron Rivera, whose history with new GM Dave Gettleman is minimal. For the sake of the coaching staff, at least, the Shula promotion makes sense.

The three finalists for the Panthers' offensive coordinator position are QBs coach Mike Shula, ex-Browns coach Pat Shurmur, and Bengals assistant Hue Jackson.
The Panthers reportedly want to run an offense similar to the one used by Rob Chudzinski the past two years, combining a vertical passing attack with a zone-read package to highlight Cam Newton's running ability. While elevating Shula would make for the most seamless transition, Jackson has a more impressive track record.

The Panthers interviewed incumbent quarterbacks coach Mike Shula for their offensive-coordinator vacancy Wednesday.
Per beat writer Joe Person, the Panthers want to keep running the same style of offense they were using under former OC Rob Chudzinski. That would make Shula, the son of legendary Dolphins coach Don Shula, the favorite. The only other known candidates right now are West Coast guru Pat Shurmur and power-running Hue Jackson.

The Panthers renegotiated Jonathan Stewart's contract in late January.
Stewart's fully guaranteed $1 million 2013 base salary was lowered to $715,000, while he received a $2.5 million "signing bonus." That money was culled from future bonuses in Stewart's six-year, $37.811 million deal. His $1.5 million 2014 base salary is also now fully guaranteed. It's further proof DeAngelo Williams will likely be a post-June 1 cut.

Pilares went down during Sunday's win over the Redskins and will need surgery. His second NFL season ends with two catches for 42 yards and nine kickoff returns for 216 yards. Joe Adams figures to carry the load in the return game going forward.
