The Bears shook incessant injuries to their secondary for a solid defensive campaign. Lance Briggs made strides at linebacker. Rookie Tommie Harris was great at DT. Nathan Vasher bolstered the depth at cornerback. Alex Brown took off at defensive end, while ‘Wale Ogunleye disappointed from Miami.
What’s Changed:
The Bears welcome back healthy versions of Mike Brown, Jerry Azumah, and Charles Tillman to the secondary. Brian Urlacher hopes to prove he’s fully recovered from hammy problems. Chicago didn’t add talent, but they also didn’t lose any.
Outlook:
The pieces and young talent are in place. Lovie Smith ran turnover-heavy defenses in St. Louis, giving the Bears fantasy upside and you reason to wait for the final round to draft defense.

Ex-Bears head coach Lovie Smith plans to sit out the 2013 season and return as a head coach in 2014.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported the same thing earlier this month, but head-coaching jobs were still open at the time, so it wasn't set in stone. Smith apparently has no interest in the defensive-coordinator vacancies in Philadelphia or New Orleans, even though they wouldn't seem to have interest in him either. Smith will be 56 years old once the 2014 season rolls around.

Bears hired Mel Tucker as defensive coordinator.
The Chicago Tribune reported Friday evening that the Bears would interview Raheem Morris for the position on Saturday, but that meeting apparently won't happen. Tucker will have a big role with the Bears, as defensive boss under offensive-minded head coach Marc Trestman. He'll also oversee the strength of the Bears' roster. Tucker runs a 4-3, Cover-2 style defense, easing the transition from Lovie Smith. Tucker spent the past four years running the Jaguars defense but wasn't expected to return following the hiring of Gus Bradley.

League sources tell the Chicago Tribune that the Bears are "very interested" in Mel Tucker for their defensive coordinator vacancy.
Tucker, who has coordinated Jacksonville's defense for the past four seasons, runs a Cover 2-style scheme and would allow Chicago to make a smooth transition away from the Lovie Smith era. Tucker is not expected back with the Jaguars following the hire of defensive-minded coach Gus Bradley.

Brandon Marshall (hip surgery) is not participating in this week's OTAs, as expected.
Marshall underwent a scope in January and is not quite at 100 percent yet. Although it's his third procedure on the troublesome joint, no one around the Bears appears concerned. Marshall has missed just five games in his seven-year career and is coming off a sparkling 118/1508/11 campaign.
