Browns fired defensive coordinator Dick Jauron.
Cleveland hired Ray Horton as its new defensive boss ten days ago, so Jauron was obviously on his way out. Jauron, 62, is a 4-3 proponent and may have to sit out a year. The two teams yet to fill their defensive-coordinator vacancies, the Saints and Eagles, are looking for 3-4 guys. The Browns ranked No. 23 in yards allowed in 2012.

During a Thursday radio interview, new Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton made it clear he will run a 3-4 system.
Asked if he planned to use a 3-4, a 4-3, or a hybrid scheme, Horton said, "It won’t be a hybrid, not unless we’re playing golf. It’ll be a 3-4. It’ll be the same defense we ran [in Arizona]." While coach Rob Chudzinski said Thursday that Cleveland would use both 4-3 and 3-4 fronts, Horton insists the Browns' defense will mimic the Steelers'. Horton spent seven seasons in Pittsburgh as a defensive backs coach.

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam acknowledged that DC Ray Horton will "probably" implement a 3-4 defense.
The coaching staff has yet to comment on the defensive scheme, while Horton says he's a "coach of men, whether it's 3-4 or 4-3." Horton has only said that his defense is going to be "aggressive." The Browns have some solid building blocks with DTs Ahtyba Rubin and Phil Taylor, LB D'Qwell Jackson, pass rusher Jabaal Sheard, CB Joe Haden, and SS T.J. Ward.

New Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton didn't comment on which alignment he will use, but he is fully expected to implement the 3-4 front.
"I'm a coach of men, whether it's 3-4, 4-3, 5-5, I don't care. I'm excited about the talent we have and they're going to love this system," said Horton. "Aggressive," Horton said when asked how his defense will be. "I don't know if anybody pressured more than I did last year and that's the kind of stuff we'll do here."

Coach Rob Chudzinski insists Trent Richardson's (leg) absence from OTAs — and likely minicamp — is "precautionary."
"We'll take it day-by-day," Chud said. We don't doubt that the Browns are being extra cautious with last year's No. 3 overall pick, but the problem is Richardson requiring so much caution to begin with. He's been banged up since the second his name was called in New York, and never really approached 100 percent health as a rookie. Richardson's upside remains sky high — there's a reason he was the No. 3 pick — but he must prove he can stay healthy as a sophomore. Constant nagging injuries won't cut it in the rugged AFC North.

Browns WR David Nelson (knee surgery) isn't participating in this week's voluntary workouts.
Nelson is still rehabbing his torn ACL, but should be ready for June's mandatory minicamp. At 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, Nelson joins Greg Little and Josh Gordon to form one of the biggest receiver trios in the league. With new coach Rob Chudzinski's history of heavily utilizing the tight end, however, it's a poor bet Nelson will approach his 2011 stat line of 61/658/5 as the fourth option in the offense.
