49ers P Andy Lee's six-year extension is worth $20.5 million, with $7.1 million paid out in the first two years.
Tacked onto the $1.1 million left on Lee's old contract, it's actually worth just $3.09 million annually -- significantly less than originally expected and nearly a full $1 million per year lower than Shane Lechler's Raiders deal. Lee essentially took a hometown discount. He's now signed through his age-36 season.

49ers agreed to a six-year contract extension with P Andy Lee.
Beat writer Matt Maiocco expects the deal to be in the range of $4 million annually, which is unheard for any punter not named Shane Lechler. To Lee's credit, he's in Lechler's class, and a major reason why the 49ers boasted one of the strongest special teams units of the past decade in 2011. Pro Football Focus rated Lee as the second-best punter in the NFL last season, just ahead of Lechler.

49ers P Andy Lee is reportedly in search of a new contract.
Lee was sensational in 2007, but his directional punting was an issue last year and he has little leverage. He's due a $1 million base salary in 2009.

49ers punter Andy Lee may have had the best season by a punter in NFL history in 2007.
Lee's net average of 41 would have been a NFL record if not for Shane Lechler's average of 41.1 this season, but Lee did break the NFL record with 42 punts inside the 20-yard line.

Kendall Hunter (Achilles surgery) still expects to be a full go for training camp.
Hunter, who blew out his left Achilles' tendon on Nov. 25, recently resumed sprint work. He won't participate in OTAs or minicamps, but claims he's on track to battle for reps behind Frank Gore come August. Still, it would be an awfully quick recovery for Hunter. Note that Mikel Leshoure's rehab from the same injury lasted roughly 13 months. Leshoure also lacked burst upon return.

Although the 49ers' medical exam of Marcus Lattimore (knee surgeries) yielded positive results according to Jim Harbaugh, the coach says Lattimore must take a "step back" in terms of cutting drills.
"The ACL looks really good for Marcus," insisted Harbaugh. "We're just going to have to take a step back in terms of the cutting because we want that inside of the knee, the lateral side of the knee to heal fully. But we're good." Lattimore conceded he'd be "fine" with sitting out the entire 2013 season. Harbaugh said the 49ers will determine his playing status at a later date.

Williams was facing an uphill battle to be ready for the offseason program, but he's reportedly on pace to return at the start of training camp. Manningham was never expected to participate in OTAs, and he's a candidate to start the season on the PUP list. Both will compete for roster spots.

Mario Manningham (knee) believes he'll be ready for Week 1.
It's an optimistic assertion. Manningham tore his ACL and PCL during Week 16 last season, a devastating injury that most players need nine months to recover from. He won't be ready for the start of training camp and will be in a race to avoid the PUP list. The Niners can't count on Manningham while making plans to replace Michael Crabtree (Achilles').

Updating a previous item, coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed Michael Crabtree's Achilles' tendon was "completely torn" during Tuesday's OTA practice, and the injury was to Crabtree's right Achilles'.
So this wasn't a partial tear like Terrell Suggs' April 2012 Achilles' injury. For bookkeeping, we like to know which side of Crabtree's body was injured, the full extent of the injury, and all dates associated with his recovery, in order to provide accurate timelines in the future. Crabtree underwent surgery on Wednesday, May 22. Per Harbaugh, the full Achilles' tear occurred when Crabtree was "coming in motion and just planted and started a route, and it felt like someone kicked him in the Achilles'." The 49ers hope to have Crabtree back around Week 12.
