GM Trent Baalke said the 49ers are "big believers" in a three-headed approach at running back.
Last year, Frank Gore averaged a reasonable 17.8 touches per game. Kendall Hunter got 7.3 before partially tearing his Achilles' tendon and LaMichael James stepped up with 6.1 over the final seven games (including playoffs). Gore is no longer a candidate for 300 touches at age 30, but he's still the Niners' feature back. Another 250 touches is a safe projection.

Frank Gore faced eight defenders in the box more than any other running back last season.
Gore saw a stacked box 42.3 percent of the time, nearly double the league average of 23.3 percent. He still averaged 4.71 yards per carry and ranked 10th in the league with 1,214 rushing yards. Now that Colin Kaepernick will have a full offseason under his belt as the starter and Anquan Boldin has been added, the passing game will have to be respected more. Gore should see more seven-man fronts in 2013.

Frank Gore rushed 19 times for 110 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers' Super Bowl 47 loss to the Ravens.
Held to just 34 yards on his initial 13 carries, Gore was sprung for an untouched six-yard touchdown off right end on a killer lead block by 49ers TE Delanie Walker. Gore's biggest run of the game occurred late in the fourth quarter, showing elite vision to find a crease off left end and break off 33 yards. Unfortunately, that would be Gore's final carry of the night. After back-to-back top-12 fantasy back seasons, Gore's age (30 in May) is the only real concern for his 2013 fantasy outlook. His game tape is still elite, as is his offensive line. He'd likely be a second-round pick if drafts were held today.

Frank Gore rushed 21 times for 90 yards and two touchdowns as San Francisco defeated Atlanta in Sunday's NFC Championship Game.
Gore managed 28 yards on eight first-half carries (3.5 average), but turned it on for 62 yards and both of the scores on 13 runs in the second half (4.77 YPC). Gore's first touchdown came on an easy five-yard jog into the end zone at the beginning of the second half to make the score 24-21. His second, which proved the game winner, went from nine yards out with several sticky seal blocks on the edge as Gore danced to pay dirt untouched. Gore is up to 44 rushes for 209 yards and three touchdowns in the playoffs.

Kendall Hunter (Achilles surgery) still expects to be a full go for training camp.
Hunter, who blew out his left Achilles' tendon on Nov. 25, recently resumed sprint work. He won't participate in OTAs or minicamps, but claims he's on track to battle for reps behind Frank Gore come August. Still, it would be an awfully quick recovery for Hunter. Note that Mikel Leshoure's rehab from the same injury lasted roughly 13 months. Leshoure also lacked burst upon return.

Although the 49ers' medical exam of Marcus Lattimore (knee surgeries) yielded positive results according to Jim Harbaugh, the coach says Lattimore must take a "step back" in terms of cutting drills.
"The ACL looks really good for Marcus," insisted Harbaugh. "We're just going to have to take a step back in terms of the cutting because we want that inside of the knee, the lateral side of the knee to heal fully. But we're good." Lattimore conceded he'd be "fine" with sitting out the entire 2013 season. Harbaugh said the 49ers will determine his playing status at a later date.

Mario Manningham agreed to a pay cut to stay in San Francisco, slashing his base salary from $3.6 million to $1.8 million.
Manningham is coming off ACL and PCL reconstruction, so he had no leverage. The total pay cut is actually $2.15 million because Manningham agreed to eliminate a $250,000 offseason roster bonus in addition to a $100,000 workout bonus. Manningham suffered the injury in Week 16 and is not expected to be healthy for training camp. Anything the 49ers get from him in 2013 will be a bonus.

49ers WRs Kyle Williams (torn ACL) and Mario Manningham (torn ACL and PCL) will not participate in OTAs.
Williams was facing an uphill battle to be ready for the offseason program, but he's reportedly on pace to return at the start of training camp. Manningham was never expected to participate in OTAs, and he's a candidate to start the season on the PUP list. Both will compete for roster spots.
