The Cowboys held Miles Austin out of some minicamp practices in order to protect his hamstrings.
Austin was feeling good and wanted to practice, but the Cowboys' trainers were wary of overworking. Austin has dealt with hamstring trouble in each of the last two seasons, in part leading to six games missed and just 58.5 yards per day during that span. This year, he will head to training camp at 100 percent as the No. 3 option in the passing game.

Miles Austin is reportedly moving around better at OTAs than he has in the past.
Over the last two seasons, Austin has averaged just 4.1 catches for 58.5 yards per game thanks in part to hamstring woes. He's spent the offseason trying to strengthen his upper-leg muscles. Regardless, even a healthy Austin will be just third on the pass-catching totem pole in Dallas. He's a WR3/4 in fantasy circles.

Miles Austin said he is focusing on strengthening his hamstrings this offseason.
Austin played in all 16 games last season, but was consistently bothered by hip and hamstring issues. In 2011, he missed six games with a severe pull. "I'm definitely strengthening my hamstrings a lot more than I have been," said Austin. "Doing a different routine, a couple of extra exercises each day on our leg days."

ESPN Dallas does not expect the Cowboys to consider cutting Miles Austin until 2014 or 2015.
Thanks to a February restructure, Austin is making just $840,000 in base salary this season -- but received a $5.8 million signing bonus. In 2014, that base number rises to $5.5 million. If Austin struggles through another year of balky hamstrings and unrealized potential, he could find himself on the chopping block. Over the last two seasons, Austin has missed six games and averaged just 4.1 catches for 58.5 yards when he was active. The Cowboys used a third-round pick on Baylor WR Terrance Williams last month.

Tony Romo (back) is throwing passes and participating in the walkthrough portions of minicamp.
Romo's recovery time was initially supposed to be three weeks, but the team is proceeding cautiously with its franchise quarterback. Coach Jason Garrett said he's "made a lot of progress," but added the team is "erring on the side of caution." Romo is expected to be 100 percent before the start of training camp.

The Cowboys reportedly believe fifth-round pick Joseph Randle can be a "full-time back" if DeMarco Murray suffers another injury.
Also injury prone in college, Murray has missed nine games through two NFL seasons. While we weren't fans of Randle's college tape -- he is straight-linish and not particularly elusive or explosive -- he's going to be a worthy handcuff for drafters of Murray. Randle can get what's blocked and catch the ball.

Coale blew out his knee last November. During OTAs and minicamp, he mostly went through his rehab routine on the side. He needs to be on the field come August to earn a roster spot as insurance in the slot.

Cowboys WR Tim Benford underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.
Benford will miss the rest of rookie minicamp and OTAs before returning for training camp. The former Tennessee Tech receiver spent the entire 2012 season on the practice squad, and he'll face an uphill battle for a roster spot.
