Lions S John Wendling was benched during Sunday night's loss to the 49ers.
Wendling started in place of Louis Delmas (knee). He was so bad in coverage that the Lions eventually brought Amari Spievey in. "When we blitzed, we knew they would throw to the tight end," coach Jim Schwartz said. "[Wendling] was isolated, but we have to be able to blitz." Vernon Davis finished with five catches, 73 yards and two touchdowns.

Lions agreed to terms with S John Wendling on a three-year, $2.75 million contract.
Wendling doesn't play much defense, but the Lions place a high value on his special teams coverage ability. The 28-year-old will return to the same role in 2011.

The Lions did extend a restricted tender to free agent S John Wendling before the lockout began.
Wendling, 28, racked up an impressive 19 special teams tackles last year to "earn" an original pick tender. He has four accrued seasons, so details of Wendling's free agent status will be determined by the CBA or lack thereof.

The player rep for free agent S John Wendling expects his client to hit the open market once a CBA is struck.
Agent Ken Zuckerman hasn't heard from the Lions in a month. Wendling, a sixth-round pick in the 2007 draft, has developed only into a special teams player.

MLive.com considers Ryan Broyles a breakout candidate this season.
Broyles is recovering from a torn right ACL, and the Lions' only notable offseason receiver addition was sixth-round pick Corey Fuller. They must feel comfortable with Broyles' progress. In a six-game stretch last season, Broyles caught 21 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Broyles is questionable for Week 1, but once he's back he'll have a ton of potential in the Lions' high-powered attack while working opposite Megatron.

The Lions' official website considers the No. 2 wideout job Nate Burleson's to lose.
Burleson won't be facing stiff competition. Sixth-rounder Corey Fuller is raw, Ryan Broyles is a slot receiver that's coming off an ACL tear, and Mike Thomas/Brian Robiskie/Kris Durham are all journeymen at best. Burleson averaged 4.5 catches for 40.0 yards per game last season, but will turn 32 in August and is coming off a broken leg. There won't be much upside here.
