3/24/2012: Signed a five-year, $27.5 million contract. The deal contains $7.8 million guaranteed -- a $5 million signing bonus and each of Lofton's first three base salaries. Another $6 million is available through escalators. Lofton is eligible for annual $100,000 workout bonuses in years four and five. 2012: $700,000, 2013: $1.1 million (+ $5 million roster bonus), 2014: $1 million (+ $2.2 million roster bonus), 2015: $2.4 million (+ $4.5 million roster bonus), 2016: $5.4 million, 2017: $6 million (Voidable Year), 2018: Free Agent

Curtis Lofton and David Hawthorne are working as the two passing-down linebackers in the Saints' nickel package at OTAs.
MIKE linebacker Lofton and weak-side starter Hawthorne will be every-down 'backers, with SLB Scott Shanle exiting in nickel sets. It's particularly notable for Lofton because he was considered weak in coverage in Atlanta. The Saints like him plenty in that role, and he should lead the club in tackles this year.

Interim coach Joe Vitt suggested LB Curtis Lofton would move to the strong side when Jonathan Vilma is healthy and in the lineup.
If Vilma is suspended, as expected, Lofton will move back to the middle with David Hawthorne on the weak side and Scott Shanle on the strong side. Chris Chamberlain, signed away from the Rams, could end up competing for snaps with Shanle.

Saints agreed to terms with MLB Curtis Lofton on a five-year contract.
Financial terms are not yet available. Considered a ''two-down player,'' Lofton is a prototype 4-3 middle linebacker and figures to provide insurance for Jonathan Vilma, who is at risk of a multi-game suspension for his involvement in the Saints' BountyGate program. Lofton has recorded 90-plus tackles in each of his first four seasons and has never missed a game to injury in his NFL career.

The Tampa Tribune's Roy Cummings gives the Buccaneers a ''50-percent chance'' of signing free agent MLB Curtis Lofton.
The Buccaneers made an offer to Lofton on March 15, but progress between the two sides has reportedly ''cooled'' since. Despite his reputation as a ''two-down player,'' Lofton has never missed a game in career, and finished 13th among middle linebackers in defensive snaps. His only other known visit this offseason was with the Saints.

Saints interim coach Joe Vitt conceded that Mark Ingram (toe, knee surgeries) is unlikely to be a full-go for the start of training camp.
Ingram has undergone three surgeries over the past three offseasons, two on his left knee. While Vitt is confident Ingram will be ready by Week 1, the durability concerns won't help Ingram's chances of experiencing a bigger workload. The 2011 first-round pick should be red-flagged in 2012 fantasy drafts.
