The deal contains $10 million guaranteed -- a $6 million signing bonus, Amendola's first-year base salary, and $2 million of his second-year salary. Coach Bill Belichick said he believes Danny Amendola can play both inside and outside in the Patriots' scheme.
Thanks to better long speed and a two-inch height advantage, Amendola is more versatile than Wes Welker. Former Rams offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels knows this, and it's likely one of the reasons the Patriots were fine with letting Welker walk. Amendola is going to be featured all over the field in one of the game's premier passing offenses.

Updating a previous item, Danny Amendola's five-year Patriots contract is worth $28.5 million.
The deal was originally reported at an agent-inflated $31 million. Amendola wound up getting less money per year than Wes Welker, which further supports the notion that the Patriots signed Amendola
before
Welker left for Denver. The Patriots also smartly tied up $2.5 million of the deal in per-game roster bonuses, meaning injury-prone Amendola will have to stay healthy to get that money. His signing bonus is $6 million. Amendola gets $10 million guaranteed.

, and that it wasn't a reaction to Wes Welker leaving for Denver.
Because the Amendola contract was kept under wraps for a day, the media took its Wednesday announcement as a reaction to Welker's Broncos deal. Beat writer Tom Curran reports the Patriots locked in Amendola once Welker decided to test the market. It sounds like the Pats were willing to pay
both
Amendola and Welker -- they proposed the latter a two-year, $10 million deal -- but Welker got more money from Denver and will have a bigger role in their offense than the Pats offered.

Coach Bill Belichick has previously said that the Patriots' offense sets up the slot for big production.
Before Wes Welker was putting up Madden-style numbers in New England, Troy Brown was the Patriots' slot receiver. While in his prime between 2000-2002, he averaged 93.6 catches for 1,011 yards and scored 12 touchdowns during that three-year span. If Danny Amendola can stay healthy for the first time since 2010, he's going to have a huge season.

ESPN Boston agrees with the Boston Herald that Patriots WR Julian Edelman is not a lock for a roster spot.
The Patriots waited nearly a month before re-signing Edelman to a contract that includes no guaranteed money, while a setback with his troublesome foot has him questionable for the beginning of camp. Edelman's experience in the Patriots' system and special-teams prowess should give him a leg up on the likes of Donald Jones, Lavelle Hawkins and Michael Jenkins, but only if he's healthy.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Rob Gronkowski's back surgery recovery is expected to take ten weeks.
There are about 16 weeks left before Week 1. Profootballtalk has reported the back surgery will occur roughly 3-4 weeks following Gronkowski's Monday arm procedure, putting a tentative return timetable at 2-3 weeks before the season, assuming all healing proceeds without setbacks. At this point, we can't expect Gronkowski to participate at all in the preseason, but he still has a shot to be ready for Opening Day. The Pats open Sunday, September 8 at Buffalo.

ESPN Boston reports that "word is" Aaron Hernandez (shoulder) can expect a four-month recovery period.
Hernandez underwent a "minor scope" almost three weeks ago, and he is not expected to participate in OTAs or minicamp. It's possible he could even open training camp on the PUP list. There remains plenty of time for Hernandez to be ready for Week 1. The Patriots will likely bring him along slowly.

The Patriots still have "high hopes" for TE Jake Ballard (knee).
Thanks to the injury woes of Rob Gronkowski (arm) and Aaron Hernandez (shoulder), Ballard's rehab has taken on a different context. If he can get on the field for the offseason program, he'll be the temporary No. 1 pass-catching tight end at practices. Ballard caught 38 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns while with the Giants during the 2011 season. He sustained a torn left ACL during that year's Super Bowl.
