3/9/2012: Signed a five-year, $58.25 million contract. The deal contains $20.5 million guaranteed, including an $8 million signing bonus and all of Sanchez's 2012 and 2013 base salaries. Another $10 million is available through escalators. Mark Sanchez went 6-of-11 with three interceptions in Jets OTAs Wednesday.
One pass was picked off by second-year UDFA DT Damon "Big Snacks" Harrison. Geno Smith wasn't much better, going 4-of-10 with a pick of his own. Coach Rex Ryan called Sanchez's display "unacceptable." The Jets' quarterback competition is going to get worse before it gets better, assuming it ever does.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen stated on
NFL 32
that people around the league believe Mark Sanchez has regressed as a passer since his first year.
This may seem obvious considering Sanchez's career arc in terms of wins and losses, but it's notable that league observers believe he's regressed as a pure thrower. "People I've talked to say that he is not throwing the ball as well as he was as a rookie," were Mort's exact words. Mortensen suggested the Jets had hoped David Garrard would open the season as the starter, before ceding the position to rookie Geno Smith. And in the ideal scenario, the team would have cut ties with Sanchez. Those plans were scuttled when Garrard surprisingly retired.

Mark Sanchez has been working on cutting down on turnovers.
"It’s a mentality," Sanchez said. "Whatever it takes. You just stop. I've never thrown the ball away as many times as I have in these first couple weeks as we have in these drills. That’s something you practice. Those things become habit. You continue to rep them and just don’t let it happen. So that’s the plan." Easier said than done. Sanchez has turned the ball over a whopping 52 times over the last two seasons. With David Garrard retiring on Wednesday, Sanchez and second-rounder Geno Smith will "fiercely" compete for the starting job.

Panthers WR Steve Smith told WFNZ Radio in Charlotte that he'd never let Mark Sanchez be his quarterback.
We don't typically blurb items like this, but this was too good to pass up. "He sucks," Smith stated in his typically blunt manner. "I wouldn’t let Mark Sanchez throw me a paper bag sandwich." And that's the bottom line from No. 89.

The Jets don't expect Santonio Holmes (foot) to participate in June's mandatory minicamp.
It's not a surprise, as Holmes is still considered iffy for the beginning of training camp after going down last September. Holmes' injury was serious, but he doesn't seem to be rehabbing with a sense of urgency, instead taking classes at Ohio State. This is a marriage both sides appear keen to end. They almost certainly will in 2014.

Stephen Hill has sat out the Jets' first two OTAs sessions with swelling in his surgically-repaired right knee.
Hill declared himself "100 percent" earlier this month, but that's not the case. Recovering from an operation to repair his LCL, Hill needs as many offseason reps as possible after being utterly lost for the majority of his rookie campaign. He's not off to a good start.
