At his pre-draft presser Monday, Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell ruled out the possibility of an extension with LT Eugene Monroe until after the 2013 season.
They also aren't going to extend Maurice Jones-Drew, who like Monroe is in a contract year. The Jaguars have been ultra-conservative and patient through Caldwell's first half-offseason, only lightly tapping into the free-agent market and refusing to make any bold moves that cost big money. They'll be able to roll over a top of cap space into 2014. If Monroe excels in rookie OC Jedd Fisch's 2013 offense, he'll likely be tagged or extended early next offseason.

Entering the final year of his rookie deal, Jaguars LT Eugene Monroe hasn't had any conversations with the team about an extension, and doesn't expect any during the season.
It's puzzling, as the soon-to-be 26-year-old is one of the Jags' best players. The No. 8 pick of the 2009 draft, Monroe graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 9 left tackle last season. The lack of talks may indicate the Jags plan to spend the No. 2 pick on a tackle, but teams rarely let players like Monroe walk. He'd be a candidate for the 2014 franchise tag if a new deal isn't reached.

Jaguars LT Eugene Monroe was an excused absence for the beginning of the club's offseason program Tuesday.
While there is no indication Monroe is dissatisfied with his contract, the No. 8 overall pick in the 2009 draft is entering the final year of his rookie deal. Arguably the most talented player on the roster, we expect the team to explore an extension sooner rather than later.

Jaguars LT Eugene Monroe triggered an escalator in his rookie deal, raising his 2013 salary from $3.55 million to $3.8 million.
Monroe has started 58 of a possible 64 games since being the No. 8 overall pick in the 2009 draft. He's arguably Jacksonville's best player, excelling both as a pass and run blocker. Entering the final year of his contract, Monroe is a prime candidate for extension this offseason.

Undrafted Jaguars QB Jordan Rodgers will be sidelined until training camp after undergoing sports-hernia surgery.
Aaron's younger brother, Rodgers is competing with fellow undrafted QB Matt Scott for No. 3 duties. This gives the more-talented Scott another leg up in a competition the Jaguars would likely prefer him to win.

Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) said his goal is to resume full-scale workouts in the month ahead of training camp.
Jones-Drew didn't practice with the Jags during Monday's OTAs. Instead, he ran 30-yard dashes at three-quarters speed. "Lately, it's been one day on, a day off, two days on, a day off — it's part of the process," he said. "I'm closer than I think. I just want to take my time and make sure we do it the right way." Rehab from Lisfranc surgery is nothing to be brushed off lightly. We'll be watching MJD's progress closely as he enters a contract year.

Coach Gus Bradley said he's giving suspended WR Justin Blackmon a clean slate.
Blackmon has two DUI arrests and a four-game substance-abuse violation on his resume since 2010. But none of that occurred while Bradley was in contact with the 2012 No. 5 overall pick. The pair is having regular conversations as Blackmon tries to stabilize his life and career. "He's never done anything wrong with me. It'd be different if I was talking to him and I didn't feel like we were connecting at all. I do feel a connection," Bradley said.

During his first official practice with the Jaguars, Brackett sustained a serious knee injury. The pass-catching tight end will need to regain full speed and burst before he can hope for a 2013 roster spot. The Jags re-signed Colin Cloherty to take Brackett's roster spot.
