Brandon Pettigrew lost 10 pounds in an effort to get "more explosive."
The drop-prone 2009 first-rounder is listed at 265 pounds. Pettigrew admits he put the ball on the ground too many times in 2012, and says "cutting out the drops and bad plays" will be his focus this season. Pettigrew is due $1.946 million in his walk year. He can't be trusted as a TE1.

Lions TE Brandon Pettigrew will count $3.47 million against the salary cap in 2013.
Pettigrew received an $800,000 bonus after triggering incentives in his contract earlier in his career, and is due a $250,000 roster bonus this season. Entering the final year of his rookie deal, Pettigrew hasn't lived up his first-round draft status, and could be allowed to walk as a free agent next offseason.

Returning from a two-game absence with an ankle injury, Brandon Pettigrew caught two passes for 11 yards in Detroit's Week 17 loss to the Bears.
Pettigrew did little besides prove his toughness, reeling in just 2-of-3 targets. He was clearly operating at far less than 100 percent. Pettigrew finishes 2012 with only 59 catches for 567 yards and three touchdowns. All three totals are his lowest since his rookie year in 2009. Although Pettigrew boasts uncommon athleticism for his 6-foot-5, 265-pound frame, he's one of the most error-prone players in the league, and has proven adept at little other than "compiling." He won't be a compelling TE1 option in next summer's fantasy drafts.

Brandon Pettigrew (ankle) is active for Week 17 against the Bears.
Pettigrew is taking the rare step of playing through a "doubtful" tag after sitting out in Weeks 15 and 16. Per DetroitLions.com, his ankle has "responded well to treatment" the past two days, but it's still hard to see him being anything more than a decoy against the Bears. Nevertheless, even that should be a big help for a Lions offense that's seen nearly all of its viable pass catchers land on the shelf. Inactive for the Lions are CB Drayton Florence, RB Kevin Smith, S Ricardo Silva, OT Jason Fox, OT Corey Hilliard, QB Kellen Moore and DE Ronnell Lewis.

Mikel Leshoure is being held out of team drills at Lions OTAs with an undisclosed injury.
"He's battling some stuff," coach Jim Schwartz said. "He can do some individual stuff but he's not ready to do any team work." There are no indications that the injury is serious, but it's worrisome news for a player who's had trouble staying healthy since being drafted. Leshoure can ill-afford more leg ailments after plodding through 2012. For now, Leshoure remains penciled in as the Lions' short-yardage "specialist" despite last season's anemic 3.71 yards per carry.

MLive.com considers Ryan Broyles a breakout candidate this season.
Broyles is recovering from a torn right ACL, and the Lions' only notable offseason receiver addition was sixth-round pick Corey Fuller. They must feel comfortable with Broyles' progress. In a six-game stretch last season, Broyles caught 21 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Broyles is questionable for Week 1, but once he's back he'll have a ton of potential in the Lions' high-powered attack while working opposite Megatron.
