According to radio announcer Mark Kelso, the Bills and unsigned franchise player FS Jairus Byrd are $2 million per year apart in long-term talks.
Kelso is a former Bills safety, and current color analyst on the team's radio broadcast. According to Kelso, the Bills are offering $7 million, but Byrd is seeking $9 million. It's a monstrous gap, and one the sides are likely to have trouble bridging before the July 15 deadline to sign franchise players to long-term deals. Aside from avoiding injury, Byrd will have nothing to gain from holding out once July 15 comes and goes.

Negotiations between the Bills and franchise player FS Jairus Byrd are reportedly "nowhere."
Byrd is not attending voluntary workouts as he angles for a long-term contract. If he insists on getting something around the five-year, $41.25 million deal Dashon Goldson got, he might be waiting a while. The two sides do have plenty of time, as the deadline to come to terms is July 15. After that, Byrd will be forced to play for his $6.9 million tender. For what it's worth, the Bills used two third-day picks on safeties in Nevada's Duke Williams and Clemson's Jonathan Meeks.

Franchise player Jairus Byrd didn't report for the start of Bills' voluntary workouts Tuesday.
He was the only player missing. Byrd will likely be absent from all Bills' offseason activities until he signs his $6.9 million tender or a long-term deal. The sides have until July 15 to hammer out a multi-year extension. It's possible Byrd could skip part of training camp absent a long-term pact, but unlikely. Aside from avoiding injury, he'd have nothing to gain.

According to the Buffalo News, long-term talks between the Bills and franchise player Jairus Byrd are in their "nascent stages."
Byrd isn't expected to report when the Bills' offseason program begins on Tuesday, and will likely skip June's mandatory minicamp. Dashon Goldson's five-year, $41.25 million deal is considered a benchmark in talks, but the Bills may be content to let Byrd play for his $6.9 million tender. The sides have until July 15 to reach a long-term agreement. Byrd is coming off his second Pro Bowl appearance.

Stevie Johnson has "no idea" when he'll be cleared from the back injury that has sidelined him since mid-April.
Johnson missed the initial phase of Buffalo's offseason conditioning program and is now sitting out full-squad OTAs. The Bills' website calls the injury a "strain." Said Johnson, "It’s just frustrating seeing the guys running around, but it’s getting better. ... I’m just doing everything that they’re telling me to. I’m doing the weight room stuff. Of course I’m inside the playbook and when they give me the green light I’ll be ready to go."

Bills TE Scott Chandler is sitting out full-squad OTAs while continuing to rehab his torn left ACL.
Chandler suffered the injury on December 23 and his training camp status is in question. The 28-year-old's role in new coach Doug Marrone's offense is also uncertain, although Buffalo did little to upgrade tight end other than draft Chris Gragg in the seventh round. Chandler's 2013 fantasy outlook is bleak.

Bills re-signed exclusive rights free agent TE Mike Caussin to a one-year, $630,000 contract.
Caussin missed the entire 2012 season as he recovered from a torn ACL. Assuming he makes the roster, Cuassin will provide special teams help and insurance at tight end with Scott Chandler now dealing with an ACL tear of his own.
