ESPN Boston agrees with the Boston Herald that Patriots WR Julian Edelman is not a lock for a roster spot.
The Patriots waited nearly a month before re-signing Edelman to a contract that includes no guaranteed money, while a setback with his troublesome foot has him questionable for the beginning of camp. Edelman's experience in the Patriots' system and special-teams prowess should give him a leg up on the likes of Donald Jones, Lavelle Hawkins and Michael Jenkins, but only if he's healthy.

Per the Boston Herald, Danny Amendola and Aaron Dobson are the only locks to make the Patriots' roster at wide receiver.
Julian Edelman suffered a setback with his broken right foot this week, and he may not be ready for the start of camp. Edelman's one-year deal contains no guaranteed money. The Patriots added a trio of veterans -- Michael Jenkins, Donald Jones, and Lavelle Hawkins -- that will compete for spot(s). Fourth-round pick Josh Boyce would have to fall flat on his face to not make the final 53.

The Boston Globe reports Julian Edelman has suffered a setback with his broken right foot, and is back in a walking boot.
Per reporter Shalise Manza Young, Edelman "could" be ready for June's mandatory minicamp, but would only participate on a limited basis. That means he should be considered questionable, at best, for the beginning of training camp. Edelman was reportedly "fully recovered" in early April, but it's doubtful he re-injured a 100 percent healed foot. Edelman has a golden opportunity to seize a bigger role following the departure of Wes Welker, but like his slot compatriot Danny Amendola, he will have to prove he can stay on the field before anything else.

The Boston Globe expects Julian Edelman to back up Danny Amendola as the Patriots' "Z" receiver this season.
The "Z" position is a combo of flanker and slot in New England's offense. As the Globe notes, Edelman and Amendola are "similar athletically," and both have durability concerns. So "doubling up" makes sense. Edelman is also likely to reassume punt return duties. He'll need an Amendola injury to matter in fantasy.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Rob Gronkowski's back surgery recovery is expected to take ten weeks.
There are about 16 weeks left before Week 1. Profootballtalk has reported the back surgery will occur roughly 3-4 weeks following Gronkowski's Monday arm procedure, putting a tentative return timetable at 2-3 weeks before the season, assuming all healing proceeds without setbacks. At this point, we can't expect Gronkowski to participate at all in the preseason, but he still has a shot to be ready for Opening Day. The Pats open Sunday, September 8 at Buffalo.

ESPN Boston reports that "word is" Aaron Hernandez (shoulder) can expect a four-month recovery period.
Hernandez underwent a "minor scope" almost three weeks ago, and he is not expected to participate in OTAs or minicamp. It's possible he could even open training camp on the PUP list. There remains plenty of time for Hernandez to be ready for Week 1. The Patriots will likely bring him along slowly.

The Patriots still have "high hopes" for TE Jake Ballard (knee).
Thanks to the injury woes of Rob Gronkowski (arm) and Aaron Hernandez (shoulder), Ballard's rehab has taken on a different context. If he can get on the field for the offseason program, he'll be the temporary No. 1 pass-catching tight end at practices. Ballard caught 38 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns while with the Giants during the 2011 season. He sustained a torn left ACL during that year's Super Bowl.
