ESPN Cleveland reports the Jets "really wanted" QB Brian Hoyer before he signed with the Browns.
It's not surprising. With David Garrard headed to the beach and Mark Sanchez's roster spot up in the air, the Jets have perilously little depth behind second-round pick Geno Smith. Despite a media-inflated reputation, however, Hoyer isn't any more proven than Greg McElroy. He's attempted just 65 more regular-season passes.

ESPN Cleveland "wouldn’t rule out" Brian Hoyer winning the Browns' backup quarterback job.
Hoyer's two-year deal contains just $250,000 in guaranteed money, so he still needs to compete for a roster spot. But with the support of GM Mike Lombardi, it's not impossible he could make Jason Campbell expendable if the Browns decide not to carry three quarterbacks. ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi believes the Browns will keep both Hoyer and Campbell behind Brandon Weeden.

Browns GM and former NFL Network analyst Mike Lombardi called Brian Hoyer a "starter" in December 2011.
The Browns signed Hoyer to a two-year deal on Thursday. "I think he’s got all the traits you need, in terms of leadership, toughness, the arm strength, the ability to move the team," Lombardi gushed at his old job. Lombardi made a habit of pumping up Patriots during his time at the league's in-house network, but he's put his money where his mouth is with Hoyer. We still don't think Hoyer — who's been waived three times in nine months — will be more than the No. 3 quarterback in Cleveland.

Browns signed QB Brian Hoyer, formerly of the Cardinals, to a two-year contract.
The 27-year-old career backup was cut by Arizona after nobody wanted to trade for Hoyer and his $2.023 million salary. Hoyer has one career start, a loss to the 49ers in Week 17 last season. He boasts a 59.4 career completion percentage on 96 attempts and a 2:3 TD-to-INT ratio. The Browns were the most connected team to Hoyer because new GM Mike Lombardi openly gushed about him on NFL Network, but he's not a realistic option to be anything more than the No. 3 quarterback behind Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell.

Trent Richardson is not participating in this week's OTAs due to a lower-leg muscle pull.
Coach Rob Chudzinski admitted that Richardson might not even be ready for June 4-6 minicamp. It's not a serious injury, but T-Rich did struggle badly with nagging injuries as a rookie. He missed one game and averaged a disappointing 3.55 yards.

Browns WR David Nelson (knee surgery) isn't participating in this week's voluntary workouts.
Nelson is still rehabbing his torn ACL, but should be ready for June's mandatory minicamp. At 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, Nelson joins Greg Little and Josh Gordon to form one of the biggest receiver trios in the league. With new coach Rob Chudzinski's history of heavily utilizing the tight end, however, it's a poor bet Nelson will approach his 2011 stat line of 61/658/5 as the fourth option in the offense.
