Bucs DT Gerald McCoy recorded two tackles for a loss, one sack, and three quarterback hits in Tampa's Week 1 upset of Carolina.
McCoy sparked a dominant defensive effort by the Bucs' (previously?) suspect defense, as they held Cam Newton's high-powered Panthers offense to 10 points. Carolina finished with a pathetic 10 rushing yards on 13 carries. Since drafting McCoy with the third overall pick in 2010, the Buccaneers have a 12-8 record when he plays. When he doesn't play, the Bucs have gone 3-10.

Bucs DT Gerald McCoy (torn biceps) declared himself 100 percent healthy.
McCoy, who sustained his injury last November, was an active participant at OTAs. The former No. 3 overall pick will be a key run-stuffer up the gut for new coach Greg Schiano. The Bucs were gashed for a league-worst 156.1 rushing yards per game last season. McCoy has just four sacks through 19 NFL games.

New Bucs coach Greg Schiano believes third-year DT Gerald McCoy "can be a dominant force in this league."
McCoy has actually been a better run defender than pass rusher through two seasons, but Schiano hopes to maximize his all-around talent. "He plays defensive tackle the way I like,’’ Schiano said. "He’s a penetrating guy who can change direction. We’ve got to keep him healthy." Through two seasons, the Bucs have gone 11-8 with McCoy in the lineup. They're 3-10 when he's been out.

Gerald McCoy (torn biceps) assured that he will be ready for the entirety of the Bucs offseason program.
"When everything starts back up on April 23," said McCoy, "I'll be the first one in the building ready to roll." If McCoy can stay healthy for a full season, his return will go a long way toward fixing the Bucs' league-worst run defense.
