8/1/2010: Signed a five-year, $20.467 million contract. The deal contains $15.083 million guaranteed, including a $3 million signing bonus, $911,000 first-year roster bonus, and second-year option bonus of $5,668,750. Another $5,183,750 is available through a "likely to be earned" onetime escalator. In a conference call with season-ticket holders, Chargers GM Tom Telesco called Ryan Mathews a "playmaker" and said he expects "big things" from the fourth-year running back.
The new Chargers regime has shown nothing but support for Mathews, but beggars can't be choosers. Telesco inherited one of the NFL's least talented rosters. He called Mathews a "great kid" who "works extremely hard," and said the Colts would "game plan around" Mathews when Telesco worked in Indy's front office. At the Combine, Telesco went so far as to suggest injury-prone Mathews would be San Diego's 2013 "bellcow" runner. The only notable backfield addition has been passing-down specialist Danny Woodhead, giving Mathews perhaps his final opportunity to prove himself an NFL lead back.

Chargers GM Tom Telesco said at the Combine that he thinks Ryan Mathews can be a "bellcow" back.
Telesco added that he's a "big believer" in using two backs, but "think(s) Ryan can do it as a 1 back." Mathews was held to 3.84 YPC and one rushing touchdown in 2012 behind a dismal offensive line, and we wouldn't expect the new regime to just hand the reins back to the injury-prone runner. For the first time since Mathews has entered the league, expectations are low in fantasy land, and he'll certainly face competition. We did find this additional Telesco comment promising: "We’ve got to do a better job up front ... helping (Mathews) out, getting him involved in the passing game."

New coach Mike McCoy said the Chargers could install some zone-blocking principles in 2013.
McCoy is known for adapting to his player's strengths. "We're not just going to be a zone-blocking scheme," he said. "We've never done that in the places I've been. We're going to do what our players do best and do multiple types of runs and go from there." After Ryan Mathews managed just 3.84 yards per carry last season out of a power scheme, a change can't hurt.

Ryan Mathews touched the ball only five times on third down in 2012.
That's out of 223 touches. It's just one of many shocking statistics from Mathews' discouraging 2012, and indicative of former coach Norval Turner's lack of trust in a player he traded up 16 spots to get in the 2010 draft. If Mathews is to get his career back on track in 2013, he'll be doing so under a coordinator in Ken Whisenhunt who oversaw an offense that finished dead last in 2012 rushing attempts. That's despite the fact he had the worst quarterback situation in the league.

Chargers WR Vincent Brown said his ankle is "100 percent."
Brown fractured his ankle last August. The Chargers are taking it easy on him during OTAs, but Brown expects to be full-go for training camp. Malcom Floyd and Danario Alexander are running with the first team, but both Brown and rookie Keenan Allen could jump ahead of Floyd in due time. San Diego was planning to "feature" Brown last season, although there's now a new regime in town.
