New Chiefs QB Alex Smith has come away impressed with Dexter McCluster in OTAs.
"Seeing how fluid he is, going in and out of those roles has been impressive for me to watch," Smith said Wednesday. "It’s easy to talk about in the meeting room to say let’s put (a) receiver in and have him run routes and be natural. ... It’s another thing to see it live. He’s a special guy." McCluster's talent has always been seductive on the practice field, but has never really translated to games. It's unlikely Andy Reid will be able to accomplish what Todd Haley and Brian Daboll couldn't, and make McCluster's unique skills change games.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid wanted to draft Dexter McCluster in 2010 and believes McCluster can add a "Joker" element to Kansas City's 2013 offense.
McCluster has been a borderline bust to this point, shuttling between tailback and slot receiver and failing to find a home. Reid sees McCluster's versatility as a positive. "He’s got a heart of a lion," Reid said. "He’s got tremendous quickness and can catch. He’s pretty good at running the football, so there is a place for him. You line him up everywhere. You can move him around and kind of do some unique things with him. ... I've got some things in mind for him."

New coach Andy Reid said he's "got some things in mind" for Dexter McCluster.
In Philadelphia, Reid's gadget guy was outside burner DeSean Jackson. McCluster is quicker than fast -- he ran 4.58 at the 2010 Combine -- which theoretically makes him an ideal slot receiver. It's still not a major piece of Reid's offense, and we wouldn't expect anything more than a bit role for McCluster.

New Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub is "intrigued" by Dexter McCluster as a punt returner.
"[McCluster] can really make you miss. I think he's got a lot of untapped potential as a punt returner," said Toub. McCluster has just 21 career returns at the NFL level and was rarely used in the role at Ole Miss. After being a disappointment on offense, Kansas City could salvage some value out of McCluster on special teams. Toub mentions Javier Arenas and Devon Wylie as other potential options.

There's no word on whether Draughn underwent surgery. A third-year UDFA out of North Carolina, Draughn was serviceable in the Jamaal Charles backup role last season, but will be guaranteed nothing under the new Kansas City regime. He can't afford to miss much time after Knile Davis was drafted in the third round.

Chiefs placed WR Terrance Copper (knee) on season-ending injured reserve and signed WR Junior Hemingway from the practice squad.
Copper, 31 in March, caught eight passes for 79 yards on the season, but he holds more value to the Chiefs as a special teams player. He's under contract for $840,000 in 2013. Hemingway was taken in the seventh round of this past year's draft out of Michigan.
