Patriots TE Jake Ballard (knee) is nearing 100 percent.
Ballard is participating in OTAs, showing "limited signs of restriction" per ESPN Boston. It's been nearly 16 months since he tore his ACL while playing for the Giants in the Super Bowl. If Rob Gronkowski (back, forearm) isn't ready for Week 1, Ballard is on track to serve as the in-line tight end.

Jake Ballard (knee surgery) is participating in Patriots OTAs.
According to ESPN Boston, Ballard wasn't showing any effects of his February 2012 ACL tear, and participated in the "majority of practice reps." Ballard won't be a factor in the Patriots' passing game if both Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez are healthy, but the Pats' top two tight ends are rarely 100 percent at the same time. Ballard posted a 38/604/4 line in 2011 for the Giants before missing all of 2012.

The Patriots still have "high hopes" for TE Jake Ballard (knee).
Thanks to the injury woes of Rob Gronkowski (arm) and Aaron Hernandez (shoulder), Ballard's rehab has taken on a different context. If he can get on the field for the offseason program, he'll be the temporary No. 1 pass-catching tight end at practices. Ballard caught 38 passes for 604 yards and four touchdowns while with the Giants during the 2011 season. He sustained a torn left ACL during that year's Super Bowl.

Patriots TE Jake Ballard (knee) is "ready to hit the field," but the team is going to "take it slow" with him.
Ballard is said to be "recovering nicely" from the torn left ACL he suffered just over 14 months ago. The Patriots will kick off their offseason workout program on Monday, and Ballard may be limited to just mental reps when the offense gets on the field. However, he's on track to be ready for OTAs in late May.

Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman was spotted working out on Wednesday with no added protection on his right foot.
Although Edelman didn't participate in practice, it's a step in the right direction. The shifty wide receiver is squarely on the roster bubble, and is battling Donald Jones, Lavelle Hawkins and Michael Jenkins for a roster spot. He'll need to be healthy for training camp if he's to have any shot at making the team.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport confirms Rob Gronkowski (back surgery, arm surgery) will open camp on the active/PUP list.
ESPN's Adam Schefter had the news first on Tuesday, but Rapsheet has chimed in with slightly stronger language, saying it "will" happen. Per Rapsheet, the Pats haven't given up hope that Gronk will be ready for Week 1, but we'd assume it's a fanciful hope. Gronk isn't a Peterson-esque healer, while the Pats have every reason to exercise extreme caution with their game-changing tight end.

Sports Illustrated
reiterates he is "not believed to be a murder suspect."
Hernandez's role in the alleged crime remains unclear after Massachusetts State Police searched his home for over two and a half hours Tuesday. Per reporter Greg A. Bedard, police are looking for a
second
vehicle under Hernandez's name in addition to the rental car considered a "key piece of evidence." We're nowhere near the end of this.
